The real issue is that lazy devs (usually of non-free libre software) assume systemd and policykit is installed.
This happens a lot with proprietary vpn software for example.
Some would say that it is a Gnome conspiracy …

Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

I am Ok with policykit but not systemd for antiX… I like to keep system clean and the mere need of installation of gnome desktop just for the purpose to make VMware Payer work bothered me enough as this would entail cleaning up this mess afterwards. I am glad therefore there was a straightforward fix without need for gnome desktop to accomplish such install.
Since (I think) installation of gnome policykit did not entail installation of systemd in this case, hopefully not much harm done. If so, can one think of using this gnome policykit for some useful purpose ones we have it installed now anyway?

          Hi

          New to the forums.

I am having the same problem with ”finishing” Vmware workstation installation.

I am a total noob, but have managed to install gnome policy kit 1, but have no idea how to change what is suggested.

Would anyone be prepared to do an idiots guide to how to achieve this?, as i would like workstation installed.

          Many Thanks

            Here’s the fix!

            1. Install policykit-1-gnome
            2. Make this change to ~/.desktop-session/startup

            /usr/lib/policykit-1-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 &

            3. Reboot.
            4. Run vmware again. You should be prompted for root password.

As I don’t know what your preferref File Manager is, I will give you general instructions for terminal.
                1. Open a terminal (Menu > Terminal)
                2. Paste this in terminal
                geany ~/.desktop-session/startup
this will open the startup file in geany test editor. If you have uninstalled geany, do it with leafpad
                'leafpad ~/.desktop-session/startup
                3. Scroll through the file and see if you can find this piece of commented code:

                # Use pkexec (you need to install policykit-1-gnome)
                #/usr/lib/policykit-1-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 &

If you found it, delete the secong # symbol. If you didnt find it, copy and paste the next piece of text to any empty space inside the file:

                # Use pkexec (you need to install policykit-1-gnome)
                /usr/lib/policykit-1-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 &

                4. Save the file. Reboot the computer.

Now everything should work. If you still have trouble, let us know.

                  Thanks Xecure.
                  Alternatively:
In the Control Center ‘Session’ tab -> ‘User Desktop Session’ (right bottom) uncomment this policykit line. Save and reboot.
