I wanted to use ROX as an intermediate step in selecting a desktop icon, rather than have my zzz desktops overflowing with icons in my desktops. Especially for my Samsung netbook. So, question is; does ROX always show the “.desktop” extensions for desktop icon files? Or is there some way of coaxing it into just showing the name designated in the ‘Name=’ line in the desktop file?

If it can’t be done, I’ll just use a different FM for that.

The cunning plan I had for this was:
      – Icon in the desktop that opens a directory with desktop icons of a certain category.
      – That icon opens a FM showing a custom made directory with my own icons that run bash files of mine
      – Select/Click one of those icons
      – Use ‘killall’ to in the chosen bash to close the first FM (I’ll assume
that there won’t be more than one FM open at a time)
      – Then that bash runs as normal, for whatever I’ve got in it.

I hope that’s not too long winded and makes some sense sense…

What have the Romans ever done for us?
Apart from: sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, fresh water, and public health?

Sounds like you just need a file manager šŸ˜‰

Folder icon in rox opens a directory with files of a certain category.

Did you know that IceWM does dynamic menus?

So, if you added a bunch of sub-folders to your Desktop folder, and put Apps or Things into them, you could open them either straight from the menu or from zzzfm by clicking or pressing enter on them… You could try copying .desktop files there and opening from Rox-filer. If you are going to use Rox-filer to open them, not the menu or zzzfm, then they don’t need the .desktop extension as part of the name.

Okay, thanks. I just thought rox might be handy because it just opens a window large enough to show the icons without any extra white space. But I guess a handy old FM will do the trick.

This is also a bit of an excuse (to myself) to try messing about with Bash files.

            PS / Hang on once
            BobC’s reply works a treat!

BUT the FM thing would be a better bet in distros with full blown FMs, like Lubuntu, or Mint or something. But I’ll worry about that if I’m using one those distros elsewhere…

              Wooooo! — that’s Perfect! šŸ™‚

It didn’t occur to me to try desktop icons without “.desktop” as a file extension. That’s definitely not on with most file managers, including zzzfm, which just shows a gear without that extension. But with ROX it does the trick. Very cool indeed! Thanks for that!

                @ BobC:

Your suggestions etc, help me save valuable screen space on my Samsung netbook install of antiX (21) in particular.

The two screenshots here are from a zzz Fluxbox session. Fist, before doing anything, and then after clicking the “Programming” icon, which opens a ROX window with all eight (!) of my icons that open ups language-specific batch files. Great way to save screen space!

BTW; you might ask “Why EIGHT programming language things?” Well, why not? I can’t say I’ll actually DO much with more than two or three, but this is just so I have some options, blah, blah, blah. Nothing to to do with me wanting to take on more than I can chew (much)… šŸ˜‰

So, you are using the Desktop folder to hold things, things to run, and more folders and subfolders of the same.

I think it looks pretty good.

Thanks. It seems to be working pretty good.

It started with me wondering how to minimize the number of desktop icons on my netbook screen.

I have quite a few customized icons of my own, which call on my own bash files calling at least two apps for a given task. So, if it’s for studying a topic, a bash would open a FM where I have the relevant files, a text editor and/or cherrytree, and likely run Anki too. The practical upshot of that is that I end up with loads of my own bash files and matching icons to call them. But in the case of the netbook, space for desktop icons is quite limited.

Although I noticed, at least on my netbook, if I put a sub-directory in ~/Desktop, then the iceWM dynamic menu for the desktop folder doesn’t show anything at all. So making icons to open ROX is a good workaround.

But anyway … thanks for the nudge (or two or three) in the right direction. I doubt I could’ve figure out this workaround otherwise. 8)

Hmmmm, try just adding a jpg file to ~/Desktop and see if that shows up? See pic above, it works here. Are you putting special characters in the filenames?

                      Try something simple… Maybe its a bug…

Okay, just did a little tinkering. I’m using my Thinkpad with antiX, not the Samsung netbook.

So, when I first did this, it was on the Samsung. I tried adding a new directory ‘programming’ (nothing at all special), and in the dynamic iceWM thingy for the Desktop, nothing showed up at all apart from a small white strip with nothing on it. I didn’t try an image in ~/Desktop on the netbook, though.

I just tried a JPG image and another directory just now in ~/Desktop on the thinkpad. The dynamic desktop showed up. BUT — the new (sub) directory didn’t appear at all. And the JPG file sort of showed up. It just showed as a generic image icon, no thumbnail. Maybe a tiny bug and/or hardware hiccups in concert?

                          I think I see it.

The Rox “Desktop” is NOT ~/Desktop. It isn’t a folder at all. But you can put links to other folders or things in it.

I would put my “Programming” folder in ~/Desktop, and then copy a link to that to the Rox “Desktop” as well, making it accessible either way.

So is the Rox ‘Dextop’ a hard link to something else?
I just assumed it was ye olde ~/Desktop as it seems to be elsewhere.

Its actually a file. Why, I don’t know. I prefer the simplicity of a folder. Anyway, it’s not impossible to work around.
