Don’t login as root (though it shouldn’t cause this issue as far as I know).

        sudo sv status /etc/service/*
To see what runit services are working (or not) and which are symlinked in /etc/service.
Post a picture/screenshot and we can start from there.

        Thx Xecure, Here it is:

PS: Not always easy to reply sometimes here 😉
“*** Forbidden. You sent forms too often. Please wait a few minutes. *** … or “arobase” into the code”

        PS2: at user:
        $ lightdm
Only root can run Light Display Manager. To run as a regular user for testing run with the –test-mode flag.
        $ slimski
slimski: only root can run this login manager program

PS3: It is no a problem, I have, in case of, a snapshot of this VM.

It seems to be there, but it doesn’t seem to be starting.

First check what is the default login manager
          cat /etc/X11/default-display-manager
if it is still lightdm, then the problem is that elogind is not starting, and because it isn’t starting, lightdm doesn’t start either.

          sudo sv start elogind
          sudo sv start lightdm

If it starts properly, then you will probably have to edit the /etc/sv/elogind/run file to be similar to this one.

If its still doesn’t start, we will have to take a look at /etc/sv/elogind/run and /etc/sv/lightdm/run

Thx … I have these files, but lightdm do not run automatically.

            Edit:
Maybe because I do not have the /run/user/1000 (etc, generated now) ?

            root@a:/run/user# ls -ls
            total 0
            0 drwx—— 2 root root 40 déc. 23 15:03 0
            0 drwx—— 9 user1 user1 180 déc. 23 14:08 1000
            0 drwx—— 4 lightdm lightdm 80 déc. 23 13:06 118

You haven’t provided all the info requested by Xecure.

              look at /etc/sv/elogind/run and /etc/sv/lightdm/run

                  It isn’t. You have /usr/share/runit/sv not /etc/sv/*

Ok. the issue now is clear.
Copy over the contents of /usr/share/runit/elogind/ and /usr/share/runit/lightdm/ to /etc/sv

                      sudo cp -r /usr/share/runit/sv/elogind/* /etc/sv/elogind
                      sudo cp -r /usr/share/runit/sv/lightdm/* /etc/sv/lightdm

                      and then restart the services

                      sudo sv restart elogind
                      sudo sv restart lightdm

hopefully this fixes the issue. It is strange that the services folders were still created empty. You will have to check if other services have also experienced this issue.

Thank you Xecure and Congratulations, that’s worked (after I did for all services, and rechecked with runit-service-manager.sh)
                        sudo cp -r /usr/share/runit/sv/* /etc/sv/

Have a good end of year for you and for all.
                        Thanks again.

Thanks for reporting back. Great to know it worked. Hopefully we can figure out what caused this so it doesn’t happen again in the future.

                              sudo apt full-upgrade says:

                              Is that correct?
