::It’s wordfence, with a 403 block. I’m going to test a guess as to what makes it trip false.
[update]tested, my guess did not yield results. Sadly my days of dealing with wordpress and it’s junk are past me, so I’ll have to pass on posting any real content here beyond basic stuff. Note: also, I was going to pm Brian with the real source, but of course, no obvious pm either. WordPress has always been nothing but a decent blogging platform with a bunch of worst in class other stuff crammed ontop of it, like CMS, Forums, etc. It’s actually ok if you stick to ONLY its blogging feature, which is all that it’s actually good at.
Since this is in the category of “you have to pay me to deal with this type of problem”, I’m not going to spend more time on it.
I do run one wordpress site, which uses wordpress correctly, as a blog, with almost no plugins or extensions beyond very basic stuff, and that is fine, once it’s configured correctly.
Just a warning however, the more plugins and addons you put ontop of wordpress, the higher the risk of a failure on update, and you MUST update wordpress every new release, which come frequently and often, since it’s such a m ajor hacking target. Really the antithesis of what Antix stands for imo, but I can’t change these things so I’ll just note this and go on my way.

::Harold, you are absolutely right about all of this. I know that you are not only a professional, you have many good skills that nearly all of us would be happy to have at 50% of your capacity.
We’ve changed forum software a couple of times. Of course we are constrained by costs, and also by the limited time of the volunteers who manage our sites. Karen Bennett is someone I’ve worked with; I’m sure she knows some better software, and PROFESSIONALLY, she probably works with it, but chances are it’s stuff way better than any of us can handle. When I get a chance I’ll drop her a note and see if our “sister” forums have different (maybe better) forum software. Also, our primary Website is graciously hosted free by Dave; I’m not sure if his site is the one impacting some of these “lack of capabilities”; both of them, like all of us, are volunteers. But maybe we can come up with some better alternatives that are still “free of charge” and more capable. If you have some good ideas, message me and I’ll see if I can coordinate something else that behaves better than what we have today; no guarantees, but it’s worth the conversation and checking around. Thanks for venting and also discussing what could become something a lot better.

::I sent out a message; maybe something is possible, maybe not. At least I posed a few questions.
If anything worthwhile arises from this, I’ll discuss it if possible or relevant. Meanwhile, all we can do is to at least be thankful that we have a fantastic, efficient, lean distribution to use!--

::The drag is, it’s VERY difficult, if not close to impossible, to migrate data and user stuff from one forum software to another, so this is really a decision that should be made one single time, and never altered after that.
Forum spam is a drag, but using stuff from wordpress is similar to throwing out the baby with the bathwater.
I’d use dedicated stuff, like PHPBB, though I don’t know the current status of that.
But you are right, it’s a real pain to change the stuff, and migrations, unless you are incredibly lucky and someone wrote a module to migrate the specific source forum, wordpress in this case, to the specific target forum, the odds of success there are close to zero unless you are an expert and can spend the required time to do the migration.
But wordpress is ALWAYS the wrong choice, as I was thinking about this, I was like, wait, I know this story:
1. bloated
2. insecure
3. prone to failures on upgrades
4. not very good at most of the tasks it’s supposed to do
5. slow as molasses
7. trying to do too much so not doing most of the things very welland I was like, wait!! I know that story, that’s windows, and it’s why I left it way back when.
As a web developer, I have always been mystified why the world decided the worst cms/forum/ etc blogging platform was going to be the defacto standard for low budget websites, and even some high budget ones, because it’s just not very good at doing anything beyond blogging. A very fine blogging tool if not pushed beyond that.
I’ve been asked too many times if I can fix an old wordpress install that is packed with extensions and plugins, and my answer is always the same, no, it can’t be fixed, and I’m not going to try. Basically that comes down to professional rates vs amateur level software installs that have not been maintained, the economics don’t work out, it’s always cheaper to dump it and start properly.
The issue of extensions breaking upgrades is one of the biggest ticking time bombs that people who happily build out a site tossing in every extension known to humanity not realizing that sooner than later one of those will fail to get upgraded, but your entire site depends on it, which then means your site is now a target for every automated wordpress malware spider bot cruising the internet.
Key is to check your wordpress version currently running and compare it to current wordpress version, if it’s way out of date, you’re at very high risk.
If you do wordpress VERY conservatively, and roughly know how to work with it, and don’t use extensions that aren’t going to be maintained over years, and ideally, never use themes or styling extensions since those are just bloat, wordpress can be ok, if you use the optimization tools like caching, but wordpress really is the worst of all worlds, it does nothing well, and you have to add in more extensions to behave somewhat normally, like page caching etc. In that way, it’s more like OSX than Windows.
Something goes very badly wrong when software tries to be all things to all people, sadly it’s not about foss or non foss, it’s just about making bad mistakes in the engineering and design of the software to try to satisfy too many different user types.
Your old forums were nice, they worked, no issues, but I think that was done by some other group that you used if I remember right, those were phpbb if I remember correctly. I don’t know where phpbb is at nowadays, how bloated it has gotten, I use a super stripped down customized version of that myself, which has some bugs, lol, my fault, but I never cared enough to fix them since they do the job and are easy to maintain.
But to me, stuff like CMS, Forums, these are really big decisions, and wordpress is always the wrong answer, that’s always because that’s all someone knows, or it’s low bid, and almost certain the person who made it will not support it into the future, mainly because usually it can’t be supported.
As noted, I don’t work with it, and won’t let my clients touch it, for the above reasons, it’s always the wrong answer to the problem, unless you want a dedicated blog site, then it’s fine. But even then, it’s not setup and forget, you then MUST do all upgrades when they come out, forever after, it’s very tedious to run even a properly setup and maintained wordpress site, I do one, just because I made it a long time ago, and it works fine, I do the upgrades, sometimes I have to do code sustomization to fix issues, but usually it’s fine as long as I don’t go too long between upgrades. I think hosted forums if the hoster has run the thing for a decade or more and isn’t going away is a decent choice, but anything that is free as in beer then means they have zero obligation to keep providing that free service, which is a poor business model, and most free web stuff I’ve seen over the years goes away after a while, so it’s technically best to pick one platform, maintain it forever, do upgrades, like phpbb, or something else with a long term proven track record, which is critical, the project needs to have a long future life expectancy, which can only be demonstrated by having a very long past life history.
I’m EXTREMELY conservative when I pick a forum, cms, or blogging platform, because I know it’s a permanent decision that I can’t ever revert.
I used to be way more up on the forum scene, but forums are declining, sadly, so I don’t know if phpbb is still the best choice, never trust anything for forums based on a cms or blogging platform, it will always be inferior I think.
A long time ago, when we did sidux, a guy kept insisting we use this horrible integrated cms/forum software, and it always broke, couldn’t be updated, because that project is a bad idea and never works. Best just to have two systems, standalone, that don’t try to tie into each other, keep the accounts and data separate, don’t try for the holy grail solutions of one system to run everything, it never works.

::I did a quick check, in terms of long history forums, nothing has changed, it’s still phpBB first, then MYBB and Simple Machines.
MyBB and phpBB both have a good track record, are real FOSS, no pay to play garbage, and if my memory serves, Simple Machines was always a bit too simple for my taste, so it’s really the same 2 it’s always been since about 2000ish.
In other words, there’s no actual real choice beyond which you like or are familiar with.
I haven’t run phpBB 3 however in its current format, and never ran MyBB so can’t say from firsthand experience where these things are at.
But phpBB has a good user base, consistent developers, still releasing, and seem fine.
Forum spammers are a virulent plague however, that may be directly responsible for hte significant decline of standard forums. I won’t get into how you deal with that issue however, but I suspect phpBB must have some decent extensions for that by now. But none really ever work right, rolling your own is better, but it’s VERY difficult.
We use a simple technique on client comments sections to only publish on admin approval, but I find that unfriendly and offputting for forums, because then users don’t see their posts, so that’s probably going too far when it comes to forums. Works well for comments though, since then nobody cares except for deleting spam comments endlessly thereafter.
Anyway, have to do stuff, all I wanted to do was post my bright and shiny thinkpad t400 running current Antix, lol, sigh.

::Tried with Links2, CLI, it’s something in the content of my data, but trying to guess which thing tripped it isn’t really practical.
This is how that’s done [do one block at a time until you find the key word that is tripping it].
Ok, this is a really really stupid filter. The thing that is tripping it is “data + :”. Usually the stupid filter rule is harder to find and more arcane, but in this case, it’s a stupid string filter, to filter data + : on a technical forum, really on any forum, is just typically inept, and why I never use these premade filters. But that’s the key word, it’s s simple string match, nothing difficult or hard to figure out. Yes, I’m stubborn, lol. This is why I donj’t use those types of premade things, there is never any telling just how incompetent the people are who make it.
Last time I hit one of these filter things was an apache security module that had bad default regular expressions, but that was a subtle regex error that was simply too ‘greedy’, and needed to be tightened. That’s actually fairly easy to make a mistake on, this one isn’t, it’s a normal word, with no valid context for removing it by a block. Now you know.
Also, the filter is so badly made that by simply repeating over and over until I found the bad rule, I was able to remove it. A good filter would not show an event had occurred, it would just not post my post, without any explanation, and it most certainly would not let me sculpt my post until it passed the filter. Exactly what I’d expect from junk running on allegedly 4 million sites. And it would have blocked me after the 3rd or 5th try, but it let me go on endlessly. Very low quality. Bad code, bad logic. Exactly what I expect from WordPress related projects.
All sudo inxi -mxxx would trip this I believe if your ram has the width data available..

::HTML seems fine, lynx and links2 worked. I logged in with links2, no problems, and even made a sample post to trigger the filter, it worked, the post submitted, and the filter clicked, that’s when I knew it was probably a POST data filter. I had suspected javascript or something like that. This forum sets a lot of cookies. More than it should.

::It’s early so I have not turned on my computer systems yet, just using one of my most powerful network devices, my Pixel 4A 5G “smartphone”!
I’ll be using my Acer 5 A515-55 laptop this morning; unfortunately antiX doesn’t yet work with this hardware.
I was thinking though if I put a kernel that does work onto my system and remaster it maybe I can eventually get it to work with the hardware; project for another day.

::I post from Links2, usually works, but sometimes it gets rejected because “please use a javascript enabled browser”. Its a bit hit or miss. I’ve learned to type my posts in an editor first so I can salvage the post in case it gets refused. There seems to be no way to copy text entered in a Links2 text box.
