::Even BETTER than that: antiX 4.9 was consuming 211MB according to conky!

::I’m using the Dell Inspiron 5558 again today, this time updating MX Linux and my personal collection of released, development, and nightly Web browsers.
This is also a stable user environment, not quite as frugal as antiX, yet still useful on a system of this age and capacity.--

::Continuing the updates of the distributions on my Dell Inspiron laptop, I’m now updating PCLinuxOS.
This is a solid, general purpose distribution. With the software, the updates, and a browser with a few tabs open, you can readily see that memory usage is NOT conserved, but neither is it a scarce resource on this particular hardware, so it’s a good system for testing and using various systems. It’s no longer “current technology”, so it’s not particularly fast, but it does have plenty of memory, multiple processors, so it’s not lacking in anything other than fast speed.inxi -b System: Host: localhost.localdomain Kernel: 5.18.9-pclos1 arch: x86_64 bits: 64 Desktop: Xfce v: 4.16.0 Distro: PCLinuxOS 2022 Machine: Type: Laptop System: Dell product: Inspiron 5558 v: 01 serial: <superuser required> Mobo: Dell model: 086DKN v: A00 serial: <superuser required> UEFI: Dell v: A04 date: 08/06/2015 Battery: ID-1: BAT0 charge: 30.1 Wh (100.0%) condition: 30.1/41.4 Wh (72.6%) CPU: Info: dual core Intel Core i7-5500U [MT MCP] speed (MHz): avg: 1155 min/max: 500/3000 Graphics: Device-1: Intel HD Graphics 5500 driver: i915 v: kernel Device-2: NVIDIA GK208BM [GeForce 920M] driver: nouveau v: kernel Device-3: Suyin Integrated_Webcam_HD type: USB driver: uvcvideo Display: server: X.org v: 1.21.1.3 driver: X: loaded: intel,v4l gpu: i915 resolution: 1366x768~60Hz OpenGL: renderer: Mesa Intel HD Graphics 5500 (BDW GT2) v: 4.6 Mesa 22.1.3 Network: Device-1: Intel Wireless 3160 driver: iwlwifi Device-2: Realtek RTL810xE PCI Express Fast Ethernet driver: r8169 Device-3: Intel Bluetooth wireless interface type: USB driver: btusb Drives: Local Storage: total: 447.13 GiB used: 15.98 GiB (3.6%) Info: Processes: 210 Uptime: 40m Memory: 7.69 GiB used: 1.71 GiB (22.2%) Shell: Bash inxi: 3.3.19--

::Made it back here today once again with antiX using the vmlinuz-4.9.0-294-antix.1-amd64-smp kernel. @ size 4854528, compared to 8941536 for a recent Liquorix kernel, IF memory is a scarce resource, the older antiX kernels are well worth using; they work GREAT on all of my systems. The Liquorix kernels are efficient and are well designed for modern systems, but they do result in a much larger image, and therefore they consume more resources. On the other hand they are well optimized, are well suited to interactive user conditions, and they use effective resource caching, so this is a case of “the latest” technologies versus the leanest technologies.
While I’ve not dug deeply into the code of either of them (and it would take considerable time and effort to understand them if I did), I have done some previous research on some of the modules used in the kernels and I have concluded that both the antiX and Liquorix kernels are more specifically tuned to interactive use than for server use; pure Debian kernels and Red Hat kernels are typically the opposite: most of them are specifically tuned for server-based and Web server capabilities. The MX Linux kernels are in between; they are an interesting compromise as a pretty good general purpose kernel. The antiX kernels are definitely smaller in physical size and without question configured for efficient memory use, support for older systems and practical resource conservation. All of them work well, but there is a definite difference in the nature of the workloads they are designed to deliver most effectively.
Without having to really understand any of this, it’s worth being thankful for what our development team prepares on our behalf; it’s very well thought out and executed!

::Spent time updating my private additional browser installations on a couple of the distributions on the Dell Inspiron today.
Test mostly development and nightly versions of Firefox; occasionally other browsers; I have very good results with Firefox because I have caught and reported a few issues that have affected me; nothing recently.

::I keep coming back to the What are you “here” with today? topic since it’s my test and comment, kind of my testing “catch all”, and I allow others here as long as you share similar things to what I share here, such as the distribution you’re using, any statistics or interesting tidbits about the distribution and things like that; Cafe stuff should still go in the cafe because this is about either antiX or distributions I use or others use to complement use cases or compare with antiX.

::At the moment I’m using an Acer Chromebook 715 to read Email and forum messages; it is very responsive both here and to my Email messages today.
By the way, in my area, it’s rare that Ethernet ports are active any more. Most places, including the place where I live, where there are ports in the wall, the only services that work are our ports to wireless router; fortunately the speeds are quite comparable to 4G LTE and even 5G access points. I’m also starting to see a lot more 5G wireless access points on my 4A 5G phone when I’m not connected to a wireless access point, and the speeds are as good, often better than wireless points right now, probably because only a percentage of people are using 5G at the present time.
I’ll be trying out a few of my older laptops (and maybe a desktop) with antiX 21 runit later today.

::Sure enough, I was able to pull out my Lenovo X201, which is a good system for checking out stuff that’s getting old these days, yet continues to offer plenty of useful service. I’m also looking at an inxi option that I hadn’t personally used, not in recent memory, if ever before.
