As you may notice, if you look at the end of the previous page and the post above, I ran siduction, then antiX from live images, then I ran two of my previously installed antiX instances, one for antiX 23 and the other for antiX 23.1.

I very rarely write in this kind of threads, but today I’m using a brand new (to me) computer, that was a sort of early Christmas gift.
For now I’m testing antiX 23.1 Live on it… and it truly flies. For most OSes, a Desktop PC that was born with Windows 7 would be just a piece of junk.
For me this is a fraking (not a typo, but a Battlestar Galactica reference) “speed demon”:

            CPU:
Info: model: Intel Core i5-2400 bits: 64 type: MCP arch: Sandy Bridge gen: core 2 level: v2
            built: 2010-12 process: Intel 32nm family: 6

            Memory:
RAM: total: 3.72 GiB used: 2.51 GiB (67.5%)

For me, this is as top of the line as it gets: Time it takes to open LibreOffice (running live): less than 2 seconds, It streams YouTube at 4K perfectly. It has 250GB very fast hard drive… I think it’s safe to say this Desktop PC will handle anything I want to use antiX for (even some middle weight gaming, perhaps? I’ll have to test that later)

            P.

@PPC I am delighted to read that you have been able to obtain a system that is NOT a netbook or bottom of the line system.

I’m also well aware that even many of my “spare systems” would be a blessing to a lot of people here.

I can at least say that I’ve put new life into many systems and I have either loaned them or given them to either worthy causes or people who are unable to purchase a system for themselves and in the meantime I use the systems to provide information on their capabilities and also to better appreciate the challenges of using systems that are no longer optimal for mainstream software.

I also enjoy evaluating systems from multiple eras of computing.

This is an old Acer tablet+keyboard that nobody ever did anything with at work, probabaly because it couldn’t run the WinD’ohs 7 that it came with. I’ve been using it as a travel “laptop” on the bus to and from work for 4 years, and AntiX was the only thing I could get installed on it (I really love the AntiX installer, btw). It’s been great for doing email, reading rss feeds, some focussed (1 or 2 tabs) web browsing – even some light python/R/octave scripting for work. It’s starting to feel it’s age now – one too many bounces in the bike panniers probably – so it sometimes turns itself off randomly (not that big of a deal for what I use it for unless it does it too frequently). I figured that I would give it a proper send off here as a demonstration of a way to use AntiX in order to delay a perfectly good (touchscreen!) machine from ending up at the recycling center prematurely (We all end up there eventually :).

@tjhsm I hope that your system does NOT die prematurely because systems this age
have plenty of remaining life. If this one does die, even then it may be worth
experimenting with, though not everyone likes getting into the system to replace
                      components.

I have to admit myself that it’s MUCH easier for me to physically work on a
server or a desktop. The last time I tried to do something as easy as replacing
a HDD with a SSD, it took about an hour, something that would take a
coordinated person about 5-10 minutes to unscrew a few things,
snap open the unit, unplug device A (again maybe a screw or a clip),
insert and connect device B, then reverse the work –
                      secure the enclosure with snaps, clips and screws, and then test it out;
none of this is complex, and for those who are coordinated, working with
a laptop is really easy because there’s just the motherboard, a few removable
parts and that’s it, so if you can work with snaps, clips and screws, it’s that
easy. Parts for old components are pretty inexpensive too, regardless of which
                      part or parts are needed.

                      All that said, not everyone has the skill or aptitude to do such things;
I’m not very coordinated, but at least I know what I’m doing. I did
have my neighbor help me out with a laptop once in the past; I say
5 minutes because that’s all it took him to replace a power supply for
me, whereas I had trouble; if I remember, all it took was to unsnap
a few clips, replace the part and resnap; shows that I’m not very
                      good at it either!

The ever helpful @PPC wrote something a while back, and we just closed the topic,
but I’m quoting his original post here because it “matters” what you are “here”
with, why it works, and the considerable effort that goes into this freely
                              available endeavor.

I’m the originator of this topic and I’m also a moderator, so any inappropriate
comments here can and will be removed. I thank @PPC for his work, Dave,
anticapitalista, the late Skidoo, our retired friend Xecure, bitjam, Dolphin
Oracle and many others. It’s not my aim here to cite or recall every single
person who has ever contributed to this work, but it is my aim to make
sure that the effort, and the civility and cooperation necessary to do this
right are adhered to and acknowledged, so here are the words of PPC once
                              again:

                              – Some users don’t value that they can have a completely free OS, that runs on almost any still functioning computer on this planet- please, always appreciate that- a lot of people worked hard, for free, so you can have it… The same goes for the forum, many good people voluntarily work here, providing a better “Customer Service” than, well most paid Customer Services…
                              – Assume that antiX works normally, even if in a different way from what you are used to or expect. If it does not work, for normal tasks, like opening a file or editing it, it’s a lot more probable that you are doing something wrong, than antiX has a bug (ex: a bug that does not, for example let you correctly open or edit a file…)
                              – Try to use general concepts while asking for help, while still giving details of what you are trying to do, what error you got, and what steps you took to try to solve that problem – For example “I can’t get back to my spaceship” is a nice start- then you should state how you tried to do (example: using the command “HAL, open the pod bay”, etc); Then state the error (Ex: The computer says “I’m sorry Dave, I can’t do that”, before proceeding to try to kill you); then state what steps you took to try to solve the problem (Ex: you tried to repeat the command, rephrase it, then finally, you jumped into the vacuum, without wearing the spacesuit helmet, and manually tried to open the pod bay).
This helps people that will try to help you here in forum- so you don’t get an advice to try to do something you already tried, saving everyone some time.
                              – Don’t treat the forum like it is your private Linux school, making endless, sometimes contradictory questions about how to do general things, that you can learn anywhere (ex: teach me use a File manager… Now teach me how to use the terminal) – there are lots of forum posts, wiki entries, YouTube videos, blogs, articles on the web for almost any single thing you may want to do, with the exception of some very antiX specific things that have never been addressed here in the forum, or, if they were, they are outdated… Use your brain, practice your skills, search for help on previous forum entries, the wiki, the help files, using search engines.
antiX is based in Debian, so most software/tips/how-tos that are related to Debian and are not dependent on systemd, the Desktop being used (ex: XFCE, KDE, Gnome) or a particular application that antiX does not include (Ex: a certain File Manager, or a certain Terminal Emulator), will work perfectly well for antiX… If all that fails, then ask for help here.
                              – Usually it’s nice to keep just one subject per thread, so people both trying to help or searching for help on a subject know exactly what they are getting into. A forum thread called “How to beat HAL at chess” should not include a question like “How to make HAL let me back in into the spaceship” – one subject can be solved, but not the other – if both are in the same thread, how will people know if one of them has a solution, other than parsing sometimes dozens of pages on the same thread?

                              P.

First of three antiX configurations on this system; this one seems to be configured
