::I’ve used 4.9, 4.19, and 5.10 antiX kernels, and also Debian and Liquorix kernels over the past several months.
They all work fine on my systems and performance differences are too slight to distinguish.
There is no quirky features or lack of support on my systems with any of these kernels, so that’s nice.Not everyone is that “fortunate” but the good news is that there are enough different kernels available to support many years of diverse systems.
I’ve been doing my kernel comparisons on antiX 21 runit Base but I have tried multiple antiX versions on my Dell and my Lenovo laptops and I’m also happy to report that several versions work too.--

::I recently pulled out an old 32-bit netbook & put freeDOS on it.
It has no hdd. So I used an old 2 GB sd card. (That is a story in itself, not appropriate here.) But, there is no wifi capability.But, I found myself wanting to go online without switching the machine.
SO for fun, I put Tiny Core Linux (latest 13.1) on the 2nd half of the sd card. (I chose it because of the lack of sd-card space.)
After installing the latest firefox, it runs surprisingly well on this old clunker!Only taking a tiny bit of disk space, yet it uses ABOUT THE SAME RAM AS ANTIX just booting up! About 150 MB RAM.
And of course, holding equal to antiX, as programs are running.In other words, you can’t get any lower usage of RAM than antiX in a current/modern up-to-date Linux OS.
It just reminds me of what a miracle antiX truly is. 😉
confirmed antiX frugaler, since 2019

In any case this one works great with my Dell Inspiron 5558 laptop and I loaded the image into memory using the toram argument.
This system has a LOT of memory so I can load most, if not all, images.

::Hi @Brian,
I noticed that your newest hardware uses the iwlwifi driver? There is a newer version of the iwlwifi driver:firmware-iwlwifi_20210315-3_all.deb
When you install this driver, it creates a version 3 that overwrites the older version 2, that comes with the published antiX21 version.
Perhaps this may solve your wifi problem with your newest hardware.
I don’t know if it will work, but give it a try.

::Hi @Brian,
I noticed that your newest hardware uses the iwlwifi driver? There is a newer version of the iwlwifi driver:firmware-iwlwifi_20210315-3_all.deb
When you install this driver, it creates a version 3 that overwrites the older version 2, that comes with the published antiX21 version.

I don’t know if it will work, but give it a try.
Thanks! I’ll see if that is a possibility; here’s the problem in my area: A couple of years ago our local library, and the senior independent living community where I live now BOTH had wired Ethernet and Wifi available. We still have the wired interface jack in the wall, but recently I discovered that it is no longer “live”; same thing at the local library. Interestingly we do now have a 5G signal in an increasing number of areas AND our community also has a pretty high speed Spectrum wireless network. IF I can somehow copy that package (maybe on USB, providing I can BOOT my system), I’ll be able to do what you suggest.
Meanwhile, I can certainly run antiX on at least 2-3 other systems – my previous every day laptop, the Dell Inspiron 5558, the Lenovo X201, and the two older HP systems, a desktop and a laptop that I obtained from my brother in law (all of which “work”) and they work well with antiX!
Rather than do battle with this wireless interface, my HOPE is that when antiX 22 comes out (hopefully SOON) this wireless interface will work beautifully on the Acer Aspire 5 A515-55 too; Debian, MX Linux, PCLinuxOS and EndeavourOS already work fine there, so I know that Linux support for that hardware is indeed in place.
Now to my EXPERIMENT today!
I’ve been using a LOT of USB thumb drives over the past 5-6 years, but until about 4 years ago, I still had quite a few DVD disks and I had MANY distributions, including many of them antiX images. So today I pulled a few out of my stack: antiX 13.2, antiX 15 V, and antiX 17.1. Of these, I found only antiX 17 works with this Dell Inspiron 5558; that makes sense because it was a mid-to-late 2015 model. Same issue there: no Wifi support.
Needless to say, I’m only running these DRIVES LIVE; they’re otherwise too old and there have been countless functionality and security updates since this software was released. The GOOD NEWS is that these oldies, but goodies are perhaps even MORE like the original antiX motto of being “lean and mean”, focusing on efficiency over the fancy stuff that is all too prevalent, so I’m happy to see that 17 still works on the Dell Inspiron. I’ll try pulling out a few of the older models later; I suspect that I may be able to get a few more of the old, “ancient” antiX DVDs working on those machines.
Oh by the way the Dell Inspiron 5558 laptop is the NEWEST hardware I have that STILL contains a CD/DVD drive; none of my newer systems even HAVE a round device for a CD or a DVD, but thankfully the newer models have multiple USB ports and a micro USB port; one of them even has an HDMI (audio and video) port!
So there’s a reason for various things; this Dell has plenty of life left, especially with a newer SSD now installed; it’s biggest detraction is that it’s almost as heavy as a small desktop system; that’s another reason I also obtained newer hardware, the newer stuff is physically lighter, more energy efficient, and faster. Those are some of the “real life” trade-offs between the classic old computers and the new stuff; glad I’m able to retain a few of each, at least for a while!

::Believe it or not, when I turned off the Dell Inspiron 5558 laptop and turned ON the Lenovo X201 laptop, I WAS able to BOOT antiX 13.2_386-full.iso! Mind you, back in those days, Debian-based distributions like ours (BEFORE the systemd conflicts), had a “thing” between Debian and the Mozilla teams about the graphics and licensing, so for those who can remember, we had Iceweasel (Firefox) and Iceape (Mozilla/Seamonkey). We also have a great difference in certificates, security and many other things.
With 13.2 I WAS able to browse yahoo.com and use Basic Yahoo Mail (minus the current features) but I was NOT able to get into this forum!
Now here with a slightly newer, “Jessie-based” antiX —
inxi -I Info: Processes: 137 Uptime: 25 min Memory: 469.4/2959.9MB Client: Shell (bash) inxi: 2.2.25 root@antiX1:/etc# inxi -b System: Host: antiX1 Kernel: 4.0.5-antix.1-486-smp i686 (32 bit) Desktop: IceWM 1.3.8 Distro: antiX-15-V_386-full Killah P 30 June 2015 Machine: System: LENOVO product: 3249CTO v: ThinkPad X201 serial: R987CYZ Mobo: LENOVO model: 3249CTO serial: 1ZHWK09G2LZ Bios: LENOVO v: 6QET66WW (1.36 ) date: 05/31/2011 CPU: Dual core Intel Core i7 M 620 (-HT-MCP-) speed/max: 1199/2667 MHz Graphics: Card: Intel Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller Display Server: X.org 1.16.4 drivers: intel (unloaded: fbdev,vesa) tty size: 80x28 Advanced Data: N/A for root Network: Card-1: Intel 82577LM Gigabit Network Connection driver: e1000e Card-2: Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 driver: iwlwifi Drives: HDD Total Size: 128.0GB (4.8% used) Info: Processes: 137 Uptime: 26 min Memory: 470.1/2959.9MB Client: Shell (bash) inxi: 2.2.25so with antiX-15-V on DVD I can actually get into this forum. I wouldn’t use this for everyday stuff unless updated, step by step to current.
Fun note: with the 13.2 “Wheezy” release, I tried it; as you may expect, leaping all the way from Wheezy to Bullseye is WAY too much of a leap; but a few “interesting” things did happen; alas, packaging conflicts, mostly concerning the lack of proper Bullseye authentications and certificates ultimately killed the experiment. With sufficient screwning around, adding in certificates, and possibly doing a one major release jump at a time for 3, 4, releases, MAYBE it’d be possible, but certainly more than it’s actually worth. You see, I DO actually have antiX 21 runit Base installed and working on this very same system; I’m just “messing around” on DVD with some really cool OLD distros from our past.
Because of modern security related issues, we really can’t use these old relics any more, not without updating a ton of packages with newer releases, However, 15-V is workable to the point that with the DVD and using Ceni for networking, I at least got in here today.
So for those of you with super old systems, there is a VERY SLIGHT possibility to get some old stuff working, AND if you REALLY carefully update from release to release OR run only from DVD you might be able to use old versions of antiX too!
My suggestion is to definitely try one of our currently supported releases before attempting any of the VERY CRAZY exercises that I am playing with today. Keep in mind that I have multiple hardware platforms, backups, numerous USB drives from which I can install or reinstall to correct disasters, and I also have sufficient experience to understand the messages I’m receiving. All of this is for experimentation, “brain teasing” to keep at least a few of my technical skills intact as I age, and wild curiosity; I only recommend this kind of whacky stuff if you have plenty of free time, extra hardware, software, backup alternatives, a sense of humor and curiosity; if lacking any of these, DON’T try doing what I’ve been doing; you can potentially destroy any existing systems, and in the worst possible scenario you can damage hardware. Have fun, but have the tools needed IF you want to take a wacky walk on the wild side; most people should NOT try this.
