For those of you who DO use the Firefox family of Web browsers and want a way to automatically update whatever version you choose – the release, the Extended Support Version, the Beta or Developers Edition, or the Nightly, plus any localization supported by Mozilla, here is a way to get one (or more) of these browsers.

Install Firefox using a repository or other methods

I’m here now with the 66 init instance of the antiX 23 init-diversity proof of concept, February 14, 2024 edition.
Now that I have it all up, running, configured, and updated, this runs for the most part as well as any other implementation of antiX. For anyone curious enough to try it out, a few cautions are suggested –

              1) First, make sure you are using the very newest image, the one that came out on the 14th of February, UNLESS an even NEWER version is announced after you spot this note.

              2) The first time you boot, whether in the live image or on an installed image, make sure you select the default boot option on the boot selection screen, otherwise there is a chance that the reboot, shutdown, and other selections will not be properly established.

              3) After the system is started, make sure you then run the command
              – To enable the multi-init grub menu after first install from iso just run
              sudo dpkg-reconfigure grub-multi-init-enabler

              4) I recommend you install the software; it works a LOT better than our usual Live images; I’m sure these
              oddities will be improved upon in the near future, and certainly before a major release containing this technology;
otherwise with these few caveats, as long as you follow these careful instructions, which are also posted at the beginning of each of the init-diversity topics; then you are much more likely to experience a similar degree of success.

              5) If you do still encounter other difficulties, please kindly report them in the appropriate thread, and hopefully you are an experienced tester and will automatically provide as much information as possible, such as precisely how you ran the system, whether you followed the instructions or if you deviated in any way from them, which environment presented an unexpected result, the steps to replicate the issue – if you don’t replicate the steps – how can anyone else also replicate and FIX the issue? Then provide as many additional details, such as the pstree, the process report, and the obligatory information reports that we always request.

As for me, this stuff is working out very well, but keep in mind that I am no longer have a very involved use case because I’m merely a Web and forum user with occasional command and simple editing in my regular workload; I don’t run many apps unless I’m helping the team with release readiness, so if you run certain apps in your every day life, add to the community and do your thing and share your experiences with us.

I did try our updated antixradio and antixtv apps the other day; they are looking well.

Firefox and Firefox ESR have new versions available from the Mozilla site as of today, Tuesday, February 20, 2024.

My Firefox Release Calendar topic provides the details.

Also the Mozilla Firefox download site recently added information regarding obtaining Firefox in a variety of packaging formats.

I performed the steps to set up, authenticate and install the various versions. Now I can get any of the available versions and language packages. I recommend it. I no longer have to maintain my own private directories in order to download and run multiple versions of Firefox.

I grabbed a new binary instance of Ungoogled Chromium, but the AppImage for the latest version is not available yet.

The version I am running is – Version 122.0.6261.57 (Official Build, ungoogled-chromium) custom (64-bit)
The newest AppImage I have at the moment is ungoogled-chromium_121.0.6167.184-1.1.AppImage

I’m now here with my fresh new installation of antiX 23.1 Full runit. Very little changed from what I had here earlier this morning prior to installing over it, except for my own customizations, which are nearly 100% complete, enough so that if I happen to spot anything else to change, it is very minor. I already have my Web browsers installed, all but one of them 100% configured the way I prefer to use them; my hidden files are copied from another antiX partition, so that’s done, and my private ~/bin directory is also configured.

                          Looking good!

I’ve had a good day because I was able to:
                              – download our new antiX 23.1 distribution
                              – run it live and partially configure the live image
                              – install the new image and complete the configuration similar to what I had on my existing image this morning.

Then I did the same thing with the init-diversity image that was created for MX Linux. Both of them work well.

I took an ISO snapshot of my newly created antiX 23.1 instance, updated with my preferred tools and purged a few things I don’t need to lighten it up a bit, then I created the snapshot. YES! It was MUCH quicker to build this snapshot than it was the last time I did it, so I installed it on my Lenovo X201, which isn’t a fast system compared to my decade newer HP-14, but it’s a REALLY solid system that still functions well, so I put my custom snapshot image here. I’ll exit the browser for a moment, run my standard reports, copy them, and bring them in after I restart the browser; that way we can get an idea of the resource usage without the browser.

                                Here is that report:
