Yeah, on systems like that Dell Inspiron 5558, running 100% in RAM *REALLY* allows it to run well, though it takes a little longer to load it into RAM initially if you are running from USB. On installed instances, once a program, such as a browser, loads into memory, performance after that is GREAT!

I also enjoy seeing how “low” I can go — how much I can squeeze out of an old system.
Last weekend, I pulled out an old 32-bit netbook, to see if I could make good use of it.
I had to settle for playing a streaming audio site in the kitchen while I’m cooking. Anything else, it just can’t really keep up…But it takes up just a tiny bit of room on the shelf, it boots up antiX to a browser, & loads the site. All I do it click once to start the audio after if finishes loading (taking a long time, of course, compared to any other computer). When I’m done, I press SUPER+SHIFT+T (on herbstluft) to shut it all down till next time. And the netbook plays the audio stream better than my phone (no stopping to buffer). So it’s great! No e-waste. And it serves a purpose.

My board is Gigabyte model: B75M-D3H CPU I5 2500K 8GB Memory. GeForce GT 710 Graphics
one of the better Sound blaster Audigy cards and an SSD as boot device.Board and CPU are if I remember correctly from end 2012.
Always fast enough for general use and will overclock, I usualy run it at nominal frequency.Browser wise, Palemoon is unusable on quite a few sites, I mostly start either UngoogledChromium
or LibreWolf. Librewolf is slightly lighter and more sprightly than latest fox, expected as without
built in extras. i.e. ping extension, glean for Telemetry etc.Apparently my usage is much easier on resources and tools. Since retirement I have really simple needs; webmail and forum sites on the typical day, that’s about it.
I am building code on an EndeavourOS system at the moment; old system so it’s taking more than two hours to complete; fortunately I am doing other things; if it doesn’t finish soon I will let the screen pause and hopefully the task will complete in the background.
Been using antiX for most of the day on another old system so it’s been ‘deja vu’ for me, a flash back to the past.
Just prior to the UNIX days I’d build software for our workstations and servers when I worked at Digital Equipment Corp. Usually I would use a server for the build and allow it to work in the background while doing something else on my workstation.
At home I have to pull out a few different laptops! 😁

No. The netbook’s speaker is sufficient for the spoken word. But if I were listening to music, that would probably be the path to take.

agree, my system is luxury, 8GB Kingston Hyper X ram was very cheap from EBay small ads
so I took up the offer, same goes for the graphics card which replaced an older GE force. Passive cooled cards
like the one now fitted and specified for 10 years industrial usage are often very low price.
When I bought the setup new I still had a good income and not much time for messing with computers, just looked
for industrial quality components and dual BIOS board. Have also T420 and EEPC Clamshell snail power netbook.4 good desktop devices waiting for someone to use them, one tagged for Bicycle collect repair donate group in an
initiative for refugees from Ukraine. We have hundreds of mostly women and children in Hannover, many with injurys
and war trauma, more arriving daily.

I believe your computers are not old enough. I revive computers with Pentium 4 and Celeron, eventually Pentium D or Dual Core. Core 2 Duo or higher are rare. The RAM memory card is DDR or DDR2, eventually I find DDR3.
So my gratitude to the creator, developers and programmers of antiX Linux.

@marcelocripe: I agree, your primary systems are older than the oldest of my recycled systems; I think all of the ones I have left are 64-bit, though I have to take a look today at the HP laptop with the broken hinge. The thing is that these “old” systems I have now were mid to high end when they were new, more so than the low to low-mid range Acer models I have now, and though the Dell Inspiron 5558 is no longer new, I bought that one new at the end of the model run so that I could obtain it on sale. But 8 GB of memory and 8 TB hard drive, plus a good sized cache (not sure at the moment of the exact specs) is hardly “low end”, regardless of age.
The netbook that Christophe has is closer in specs to the stuff you have, but it’s probably also newer.
I used to own a Dell Dimension 4100 desktop, which is a 32-bit unit. Like the Inspiron, it was very solid, though by today’s standards it would be very slow and it’d ONLY run on very minimal distributions like antiX. Last I used it, though it was memory limited (256 MB if I remember correctly), I retrofit it with a second disk. At one point in time I had twelve distributions PLUS a version of VXworks, a real-time system loosely based on a UNIX-like kernel with a real time scheduling system. It was fun to experiment with that system while I had it. That one was stolen from my house, as was some luggage that was used in the “heist” and a few other items. The thieves were quick, but they got away with 3-4 items, and strangely left some other much more valuable things. Curiously that old computer really wasn’t worth very much at that point in time! That’s the only time I’ve been “robbed”; I think I was at work when it happened.
