This session on a small pile of mini-pc’s – an Asus Chromebox that went EOL that I simply put into developer mode, and enabled the usb and keyboard. Enabling the usb doesn’t mean you can boot from it, you can merely use it for data transfer). And no need for downloading any custom mr.bios or anything like that. The internal Google os was completely wiped with a standard install. antiX simply smokes on it!

It doesn’t boot from the usb (bios limitation), and had to use the SD-Card port which you can boot from. And like some machines, it gets cranky and won’t boot from any distros in cdrom iso9660 format on a stick. (Some bios purposely do that to prevent what I’m doing with it right now – some Intel Nuc’s are the same way unless you go into the bios and allow for iso9660 boots. But in this box, I didn’t want to hassle again with developer mode or load custom 3rd party bios.

Note: to be completely honest, on *this* machine, I used Ventoy to bypass the iso9660 boot lockdown, which allowed me to boot antiX merely for the normal installer. And just for this machine as a tool. I would NEVER run antiX from Ventoy on a normal basis – too many cool tools which the devs already provide to do it right. But this use of Ventoy was just an edge case. Heh, and since Ventoy won’t recognize SD-cards, I had to put the sd-card into a usb<>sdcard adapter. But what a hassle. I tried daisy-chaining an install, by booting antiX on another machine, using the installer to put itself on the sd-card and booting the chromebox that way, but when I tried to do so, at the chromebox boot, it reported that the “Install Media was Corrupt”. Probably a bad card, I thought it would work, but got lazy and used Ventoy to crowbar antiX in there. 🙂

Again, this was an edge case usage. Under normal circumstances, there is no need nor is it wise to use Ventoy as a normal operating environment for antiX. It has been said many times here in the past and I agree.

@PDP-8 I’m sorry to read that various hardware difficulties have more or less forced you or at least “strongly encouraged you” to experiment with a variety of different approaches. I’ve tried Ventoy before but I only used it so that I could store multiple ISO images on a single bootable device; too bad it was necessary to “go hunting” for an approach that would get you past what you refer to as a “boot lockdown”.

Is there any way to use a USB Flash Drive created with the Live USB Maker without having to resort to this “boot lockdown” resolution technique? I hope so; otherwise it sounds like that specific hardware is very close to “end of life”, not only in terms of support, but perhaps in terms of usable hardware too. I hope that you have other options and this isn’t going to force you to spend your hard earned money until you choose to do so!

          Best wishes in your adventures!

Yeah, no problem! Part of the game on some weird consumer hardware. Part of the game which antiX saves from the dump!

Here’s another one: An Intel Compute Stick model STK1A32SC circa 2016. I’m on it right now. Back-of-the-tv kind of computer. Ubuntu tried to get into this compute stick game with 14.04 with earlier models. On this model, the bios allows for selectable 32 or 64 bit OS (windows, but ignore that and choose either 32 or 64 bit), so I’m running 64-bit antiX right now. Connman picked right up on 802.11ac ! Yes!

            https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/91064/intel-compute-stick-stk1a32sc.html

The external micro-sd card slot is not bootable by design. And I don’t relish running a full system on micro-sd anyway, either internal or external unless I’m going raspberry-pi retro. So here is my setup:

            1) Running an antiX live-usb to boot (and run normally with) from the usb3.0 port. The external usb 2.0 port has a 4-way travel usb hub for keyboard and mouse.
            2) The crusty version of windows 10 it came with on the mmclbk device (aka internal micro-sd), I blew completely away with gparted in antiX, and simply reformatted to fat32 for handy internal storage outside of my persistence for things like the antiX image itself, snapshot iso’s, pictures, movies, and so forth.
            3) My hdmi monitor doesn’t have speakers, and there’s no audio jack, so … use a usb<>audio dongle for audio.

So it’s pretty snappy for a 2gb machine. Couple of browser tabs. Runs much cooler than windows that’s for sure! I did have to reset the internal bios clock battery/capacitor. Absolute fun to see it get put to good use with antiX.

I have a few systems that definitely run better with antiX but I think that I tried MX Linux on all of them and they not only work, they also work properly, just slightly less responsive than with antiX.

Once upon a time most distributions were lighter and faster than Windows. While that’s often the case some distributions with GNOME or KDE are not much lighter anymore.

I have a Lenovo X201 laptop and a Hewlett Packard Pavilion S5737 desktop, both given to me by my brother in law rather than getting recycled.

They were both really good units in their prime but barely started with the software they had. I replaced them with antiX and they’ve been working well ever since.

Here is another mini-pc but it needed antiX 23.1 FULL to get audio to work. Normally I run with Base, but Full did the trick. I tried both the legacy and modern kernel and all is well. Also booted from standard and uefi modes with the live-usb. It is a VNOPN fanless. Brand agnostic when it comes to these things, so not a recomendation pro or con, other than air-cooled like a vw-bug. 🙂

Unlike other rigs, this one only had one audio channel, so there was no card to select. I guess it figures out on it’s own to use hdmi or analog speaker audio? Dunno’.

@pdp-8 So nice to see you working with all kinds of different systems. The 2016 model probably runs GREAT when you can get it working. I happen to have a Dell Inspiron 5558; when I run the information report it comes back stating “2019”, but I’m pretty sure it is because I updated the firmware, NOT because it’s actually a 2019 model; I looked it up and my memory is accurate on this: it is actually a 2015 model, and the architecture is actually older than because it is one of many models in the 5000 series. I think I got mine in 2016; that’s usually my pattern; I get new systems usually after the NEXT models are released so the prices go down considerably. Then, if possible I look for additional sales, so I’m able to obtain very good price/performance ratios.

The model I’m using, an HP-14 with a Ryzen 5 5500U processing unit says 2021; I definitely got it AFTER that time, and this one is something I can use for a long time. Some things I like better about the Dell – backlit keys, flexibility to test V4, 5, and 6 kernels and rugged construction; that rugged construction is also a disadvantage, depending on what I’m doing; it’s very heavy for a laptop, and though the CPU is more powerful for computation than the Ryzen 5, it’s older by a few generations. The HP lacks backlit keys and though it has 12 process threads in six processors, (and it’s fine for every day stuff), it’s when I do the rare build that its shortcomings appear – it takes a very long time to compile anything other than small programs. Even my UNIX workstation and servers from 20 years ago could build environments faster, so the combination of components is great for interactive work but lousy for anything else.

These kinds of traits are not always obvious at first; I didn’t even notice some of these things until I tried other workloads. The Dell ran really well, but it had a physical hard disk drive with 8 TB of capacity; the capacity was NOT the limitation, but the I/O throughput was terrible, so I replaced it, but because of the age of the design, I didn’t think that an NVMe SSD would work (and I’m pretty sure that is correct) so I played it safe and got a modest spec older SSD and that at least improved routine I/O responsiveness.

Because of experience with both desktop and server systems prior to retirement, I can tell when certain things have limitations. I suspect that most of us here use equipment that has many limitations and it’s the goodness of antiX that provides us with something usable for routine interactive and network activities.

Sometimes I drive a crooked road to get my mind straight.
I don't suffer from insanity. I enjoy every minute off it.
