::I’m here with the Dell Inspiron 5558 laptop; I grabbed the stats just prior to opening the Web browser this time, and I used the 4.9 kernel, which (like others) I feel uses fewer resources, for those systems which are able to support it.

::I do notice that the initial ‘top’ memory shows up a bit LOWER, not higher than when I used the 4.9 kernel; however, I had been using a browser.
I’ll reboot and run that test again, and I predict a DIFFERENT result. The reason is that some of the cached memory allocated when the browser was started was not all released following browser closure, but if the stats had been collected immediately after boot, a different, lower memory allocation is expected. I will attempt to confirm this. If I’m right, this will confirm my understanding of the current Linux kernel memory allocation in the scheduler.--

::More processes run with the 4.9 kernel, that appears to explain the memory usage difference.
If you look at the first stat in this group, the one with the FIRST Liquorix 5.19 kernel in this grouping only had 163 tasks running; the first run with the 4.9 kernel had 193 tasks running; the run with the 5.10 kernel had 170 tasks running and the 4.9 kernel had 187 tasks running; with this information, it appears that the 5.10 kernel uses (or at least had) fewer tasks running and appears, in that context, to be slightly more memory conservative.Whatever actual memory used that is saved appears to be a rather small difference in the kernel sizes and is much more impacted by the virtual memory used by additional processes; that makes sense. To conserve the most possible memory, you’d want to remove any daemon processes that you do not use in your workload – as long as they are NOT required to operate the overall system. If you’re not sure, leave them alone; you can see by these statistics that the differences are not very significant; opening an editor or Web Browser definitely consumes considerably more memory than these few lightweight daemon processes!

::Also note in this brief “study”; while the conditions are not perfectly validated, they do give us a rough idea about the memory utilization on one system using a few different startup routines with three different system kernels.
A much larger sample size would be necessary to make these observations statistically valid, but they do provide a general idea of what took place in my tests today.
