::Starting to make progress on WHY the 5.10 antiX kernels have not been working lately; turns out the 4.9 kernel ALSO stopped working, which I discovered as I started this work. I changed the flags so I have nomodeset and I can see more messages. I’ve also started to read the logs, and I discovered that:
1) When I use our kernels, for some unknown reason they’re not interacting properly with the X server, and 2) slimski is waiting on a lock and/or connection, and gives up.
I’ve yet to determine a cause for either of these things but I’m open to thoughts as I continue to research, diagnose and figure this out.

::… following up on the above, clearly something changed.
One “HINT” is that it looked like a nouveau x server feature was added in one of the updates, and I found that it took out quite a few of the other X server packages, so I got rid of nouveau and tried to reinstate the regular X server packages. First try, that didn’t fix everything, but I still have a feeling it’s at the root of this issue; I just may have something else hiding in some configuration that needs to be purged before this solution is complete.
Anyway, more than ever, it’s smelling like the kernels are NOT at fault, but the current configuration of the system has some flaws that need to be found and repaired!

::NOTE that I’ve successfully installed 4 and 5 series antiX kernels on all of my hardware. Even the Acer can BOOT the 4 series; it’s just that it needs our 5 series to provide wireless hardware support for that unit’s wireless interface.
We’re clear on the 142 kernel from this camp, only 1 or 2 users experienced difficulties; their problems may be similar to what I encountered; if so, try booting from the antiX 21 USB, select the version 5 kernel at boot time, then if that works, bring in 5.10.142; I was able to get 5.10.57, 5.10.137, and 5.10.142 all working just this evening, along with pulling in 4.9.0-326 to go along with 4.9.0-279, and verify these too; they all work on the Dell Inspiron 5558 laptop, which is what I had *thought* from the beginning; today after REINSTALLING, though this time I did it with sysvinit, they still work!
I’m a fan of runit; I’ve been using it for quite some time on the Dell and the Acer; the antiX 21 stick to reinstall just happened to work properly for me here today; I may have made or updated the other one on another system; neither here nor there, the good news is we have more proof that the kernel will work for another Dell model, something commonly used in the USA, so we’ll have plenty of people able to use these images. So that’s more good news for this week.
I’m in the middle of my medicinal “cocktail” to improve my current illness; that didn’t stop me today from proving this once and for all!

::DRUM ROLL…
antix 5.10.142 revision 2!Congrats!
Finally working… You spent lots of time on this during your recovery. Greatly appreciated…
It looks like the subset of users/hardware having problems with kernel 5.10.142 is now significantly reduced.Live antiX Boot Options (Previously posted by Xecure):

::Yeah, I think that whoever is still having issues with the 5.10.142 kernel either has hardware that can’t handle any of the 5 series kernels OR they have a situation similar to what I had. In my case, somewhere along the line I had an X server issue; I came back to the system, thought it was resolved, but when looking closer today, only a fraction of the packages were in place, and the ones I was using didn’t interact well with our setup. Moreover, I think there was some unwanted cruft there too. Had I been feeling a little better I would have hacked around more, but I decided it was more important to get an active tester on board with this image; of the 2-3 people having problems, I’ve probably been in the community longer than both of the others combined, so I thought the experience was important and if we really did still have issues, clearly identify what they were; fortunately I was able to determine, as I had been suspecting, that the actual culprit was a package update flop that damaged my overall X server configuration. Reinstalling at this stage in the project was quicker than diagnosing that mess any further.
If I were younger, faster, and healthier this week, I may still have gone that route; instead at least we have a viable solution. 142 is clear on runway 1!

::Appreciate all your work, Brian.
Hope you feel better soon.
Thanks! The one “problem” that still rears it’s head is that with multiple kernels installed, when I switch kernels or start up the 142 kernel after a poweroff, it seems to do the long hunt for /dev. However, IF I try a few times, or first boot to a 4.9 kernel, then instead of a poweroff shutdown, do a reboot, that seems to help. Haven’t determined the root cause of this remaining issue, but a message about SELinux is one possible clue. That one I’m still doing a bit of follow-up detective work on!

::I’m here using a Live USB with antiX 21 and I’m setting it up with one of the flavors of Frugal persistence and see how well it goes today.
I set my inxi.conf to allow me to update it here, so this is what we have right now, including the browser running:

::I’m still here with the Frugal instance I started earlier. I went through most of my Email and initial forum messages to read using the current release of Palemoon.
Now I switched over to the Firefox ESR that comes with the antiX 21 release, though I did UPDATE the software, so I’m getting Firefox ESR 91.13.0esr at the present moment, which I believe is the CURRENT ESR until the versions shift – the next round of Firefox releases is nearly upon us. (I have another topic with the various Firefox versions and updates with the specifics).--

::I just shifted to Firefox instead of Firefox-ESR. This one is showing up today as Firefox 104.0.1.
I started this one up from the command line, with “apulse firefox” to see if the sound on this Frugal instance will work.
Answer: it does work.--

::Continuing with — using a Live USB with antiX 21 with one of the flavors of Frugal persistence.
One of the things I was concerned about when running like this for a long time was something mentioned earlier by someone – USB getting very hot.
In my case I tried to put as much of this instance BACK into my persistent state and I think it’s working.
The USB is still on and it is warm but not super hot; the one I have is plastic; that would have been a disaster!Anyway my next step is to turn this guy off and then come back and see if it retained the persistence I created; in the past it’s worked fine.
