                        … except for a different kernel.

                        By the way, I may be honing in on a reason, but not the root cause, as to why some of the 5.10 kernels are not running properly on this Dell Inspiron 5558.

                        I tried booting one of the 5.10 kernels, either 5.10.142 or 5.10.137 and for some reason, it wasn’t finding the X server – and it was “Waiting on /dev…”; I booted with nomodeset and got in, but only to the command line and that’s when I found that X wouldn’t start; yet, I reboot with either a Liquorix kernel or a 4.9 kernel and I get into X! Reason still TBD, but at least I’m getting SOMEWHERE!

                        I removed the firmware as a possibility; recently upgraded the firmware to as close to current as possible; the fact that SOME kernels still boot and provide full services is a clue that at least part of the 5.10 infrastructure is not pointing or linking to X services properly.

                        Must be either peculiar to this system or a defect deep in some code; 5.10.142, and 2-3 other 5.10 kernels work FINE on a couple of my OTHER systems!

                            Yeah, a few of my oldest systems are that way too. Pretty slow performance, odd error messages, likely to be “marginal” hardware, yet they’re handy for quick testing, keeping a “geek like me” happy with occasionally using something different, and like Torvalds from years ago, doing stuff “Just For Fun”!

                                  Dear Brian,

                                  I have this message in my dmesg log with my Dell Latitude 5590;

                                  i801_smbus 0000:00:1f.4: Accelerometer lis3lv02d is present on SMBus but its address is unknown, skipping registration

                                  Searching with Google, many Dell and HP laptops have this problem with the Linux kernels.
                                  There are patches on the internet but I really don’t know if you can fix this yourself. I don’t have the skills to do it.

                                  Do you also get this type of message on your Dell and/or HP computers?

                                  Best regards,
                                  Wallon
