Most of the time I open the terminal and collect the information stats BEFORE I open a Web browser. The previous report shows 577.5 MiB memory used; that’s clearly BEFORE the opening of the browser, but it does include the cost of the pinxi command, the terminal emulator, Conky and the few other tools that are already running.

Add in the browser and those numbers jump to 1.51 GiB (21.3%); still LOTS of free memory!

Between the Liquorix and xanmod kernels, users who have NEWER equipment, have plenty of memory for advanced caching operations and other advanced features, these two alternate kernel sources are similar and both offer excellent interactive performance. I’ve added xanmod now to two distributions and I’ve been using them with good results for the past two days.

For those with older systems, our 4.9 kernel is excellent, and if you still need a REALLY old one, the 4.4 kernels are still available (4.4.296 is a helpful choice).

LOTS of great kernel options out there for us!

Updating Linux kernels; both Liquorix and linux-xanmod-edge have updates today; I’ll reboot and try them both out later.

Back in action after a long weekend vacation to the Atlantic seacoast.

I’ll update my antiX environment in a little while, either modifying this note or adding another informational update.

Regarding recent kernel discussions, there really isn’t enough difference in size or speed to make an argument in any direction.

It’s more a question of what your hardware can handle. For really new systems, you can’t use any of the kernels unless you have an Ethernet connection because the WiFi modules on new computers require newer firmware and thus newer kernels. The really old systems usually can handle new kernels, but there are efficiencies to be gained with the older kernels, provided the security updates are applied.

I went back to some pretty old systems and most CAN run newer kernels, but there are a few exceptions, depending on the hardware you use; with the commodity systems I’ve used from major manufacturers such as HP, Dell, and Lenovo, they’re pretty good with most kernels, but in some cases, we can’t guarantee; some hardware support has been dropped in the newest kernels, so some users may HAVE to use a 4 series kernel.

Here with antiX and a brand new 6.0.2-x64v2-xanmod1 Linux kernel. I’ve only seen a few 6.0 kernels; EndeavourOS has them; I found this source late last week; it’s the way to go if you want the latest kernel for your recent vintage system; you can try them out if you wish for other systems too; search for xanmod Linux kernel.

The information script inxi is actively in development; the development implementation, pinxi shows that there have now been 7 updates toward the 3.3.23 (or however the next version is numbered). antiX on new systems requires a different kernel in order to support wireless networking, so I’ve been using the 6.0.2-x64v2-xanmod1 or the latest xanmod1 kernel recently on my newest computer:

With the Firefox Developer Edition running here, this is the basic information that is displayed by the information tool, which I have copied to my personal ~/bin directory so I can freely control it as I prefer. I also have edited the /etc/inxi.conf file as follows:

                            cat /etc/inxi.conf
                            B_ALLOW_UPDATE='true'

                            — this allows me to update the “official” copy of inxi too; you’re on your own if you choose to do this and you actually know and understand what you’re doing!

                            inxi -b

… “hint” for the curious and creative ones:

                              1) sudo geany /etc//etc/inxi.conf
                              2) change B_ALLOW_UPDATE=’false’ to B_ALLOW_UPDATE=’true’
                              3) Save and exit geany.
                              4) now you can run sudo inxi -U and it will update the inxi information script when there is a newer version available.

The easier, safer way, in my opinion, is to copy /usr/bin/inxi to a personal directory, for example, cp /usr/bin/inxi /home/my-id/inxi
The file is owned by root, but it’s ownership and permissions are:

                              ls -l inxi
                              -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1154827 Oct 11 10:24 inxi

so when you copy it, the permissions will remain the same, but if you DON’T use sudo and simply use cp, since it IS readable and executable, it’s possible to copy it into a private location without using special permissions, rights, or a privileged account.

There you have it; if you want to have your own copy of inxi to update, read, experiment with, etc., there you go!

Those interested in pinxi can see if they can figure it out; otherwise if I’m around, I may be able to provide details. I am going to be away for several days to visit family.
                              Leaving tomorrow morning early.

One other note: unless you either add the location where you copy this, or any other executable file, to your PATH, you will have to provide either a relative path or an absolute path in order to run your program, whether inxi or something else.

The default location of inxi, /usr/bin, IS in the default PATH so it works.

This is basic stuff, but I mention it for those who are “learning” how to do things. Hope this stuff interests someone beside me at some point; if not, this is sort of a journal of some of the things I do with antiX. That’s what I originally created this thread for; occasionally others “chime in” (and you may do so, as long as it’s about similar things to what I share here, perhaps with your own personal preferences).
