::Today I am thankful for the countless people who have put together the overall freely available software communities.
Stallman certainly has done a lot with the GNU effort, as have the many people who have written software using any of the GNU licenses, but as we also know, there has been more than one interpretation of freedom in software. Some is 100% free in source code, other approaches are simply open, still others are a blend of free and proprietary work and yet other work is 100% commercial and proprietary. All of them provide certain capabilities and services.
I generally use Linux software but I am not opposed to the existence of the free and commercial alternatives. I’m sure that something commercial in some way has provided a livelihood for many of us, maybe most of us. What’s nice is when we can somehow share with one another in one way or another. Even opposite approaches can sometimes complement each other. When you make both available there’s room for many different things we can accomplish.
Believe me, freely available software has always been in my arsenal and preferences but I have worked for large business in automotive, education, financial services, electronics and computer systems as well as small, local business. All of them together form products and services used in community all over the world.

::Going back to the statistics I have shown over the past couple of days, a few unscientific instances of resource use data indicate that antiX definitely uses fewer resources than other full-featured distributions, even when a simple window manager is installed and used on those systems. Past work I’ve done in this area does demonstrate that if you stop and/or disable the majority of daemon and other processes that typically run on full-featured distributions, you can further reduce resource use, but it’s much easier and still more effective to simply run antiX!
Also, the recent statistics clearly show that running antiX on older hardware results in using a couple hundred MB less memory just after system start up.
I’ve wondered why I’m using over 300 MB on new hardware; it sure looks like the newer hardware requires significant additional resources, which it fortunately has available.
Stats from 10-15 years ago are even lower; I’ve seen reports from users with older systems than mine and their stats are closer to the stats I used to find when I had systems from the late nineties and early 2000s. These observations do seem reasonable; the more modules needed the more resources are consumed.
