It’s a foggy but mild morning in the “Upstate region” of South Carolina, currently 52 degrees Fahrenheit with fog for much of the morning, then warming up into the mid sixties.

While certainly nothing exciting it beats the COLD of the two northern states that I lived in prior to retirement, Michigan, the state where I was born, and New Hampshire, the state where I worked for the majority of my professional career.

When I was young I got my undergraduate education at Michigan Tech in the western Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We received a lot of lake effect snow off Lake Superior, the largest and coldest of the “Great Lakes”. The snow was voluminous and beautiful and I effectively received an “honorary” graduate degree in winter driving and snow removal. We had these huge snowplow like shovels that you didn’t pick up, you dragged them until they were full then pushed them away from where you wanted to park your vehicle.

When I was a senior I hired a resourceful man, who offered to shovel snow and clean off my car for $30/month! I gladly accepted his offer. I won that one! It snowed almost every day and we set a record for the most snow in the US East of the Mississippi River, a record that’s not been duplicated. We had 356″ in town and exceeded 400″ about 10 miles away up the Keweenau Peninsula.

The Colorado Rockies and the Cascade Mountains get between 500-600″ some years but that’s in elevation in excess of 10,000 feet. Houghton, Michigan is under 700 feet, stated at 666 feet in the city.
Population there is about 8000 people. It was around 5000 people when I was there so the 5000-7000 students equalled or exceeded the population at that time!

OLD HISTORY from a retired computer systems software engineer from Michigan Tech!

Early afternoon; this morning the fog was thick; now it’s just cloudy. As for antiX, it’s humming along.

Here’s a short summary since nothing’s changed so far; this one is immediately after boot up so I can capture early memory usage.

The fog seems to be cleared up but it’s looking like rain is on the way back again. We didn’t get any snow back near Christmas when we had a few days with very rare (for our region) single digit frigid cold and dry weather.

So far in 2023 we have had rain but no snow. I think we’re getting warmer weather in South Carolina than roki is getting in central Texas right now.

South Florida always brags about their warm weather but they have a much higher risk of high winds, torrential rains and stuff like that, plus alligators on the loose in a few isolated areas.

We have a small mountain near us called Paris Mountain that does a pretty good job of diverting extreme weather conditions around us. We’ve had a couple of funnel clouds nearby a few times but they always seem to turn and just miss us. My very unofficial opinion is that the mountains take care of us!

You guys in Pecos, TX have a “cold snap” right now. We’re avoiding it, though the “northern” colonial states are getting pretty cold, and are expecting sub-zero “wind chill ratings” by Friday. Here though, “no problem mahn!”

As far as newer kernels for my HP-14, (2021 build), I have to snag kernels from elsewhere and custom configure the library modules in order to get the correct wifi configuration and support for the motherboard and peripherals on this system (this is my only current system that I have to do this in order to get antiX working properly; my other systems run great with antiX, although my other “caveat” is that none of the 5.10 kernels, whether Debian or antiX, work very well with my Dell Inspiron 5558 laptop; sometimes I can get them working after many attempts; I use Liquorix kernels there too in order to have it run smoothly; my other older systems have worked really well with the 4.9 kernel, so I’ll have to go another direction soon if I want to keep them “up to date”.

Incidentally, that difficulty with specific kernels is the FIRST time in 25 years that I’ve had difficulty booting – in this case getting past the loading of the /dev device tree; so my problems with distros in general and antiX in particular has been very rare up until the 5 series of kernels, and yet ONLY the 5.10 tree was a problem for me!

Back to my latest, the Xanmod1 kernel updated to 6.1.9 today; I’m starting to see 6.1.8 and 6.1.9 in the most up to date kernels.

@rokytnji: Bluetooth is the other thing that is sometimes problematical. In some places it seems to work fine, then other times it won’t work at all.

I turned on my Bluetooth headphones (which fortunately, also have a USB and a round, direct connect that works on some devices. Either they were auto connecting to my phone or they weren’t connecting here; I’ll have to explicitly turn off Bluetooth on my phone and then see if I can get a connection.
The Debian based implementation of Bluetooth is one of the worst, at least the last time I researched the topic; hopefully it has been greatly improved, but with some of our old stuff, who knows?
