::Firefox almost 1Gb memory footprint?
With careful configuration of Chrome or Chromium (such as ungoogled one) seems more memory frugal. Not scientific comparison, just practical experience:

::Regarding Browser Firefoy and high Ram.

355.8 MiB + 92.3 MiB = 448.2 MiB librewolf (7)
237.1 MiB + 152.3 MiB = 389.4 MiB chrome (10)Very little difference between a “cleaned up” FF ESR and
UngoogledChromium. Both have U Block Origin and MetaGer
search installed. Probably LibreWolf somewhat higher RAM
usage could be quickly reduced by applying more changes
in about:config to mach ESR.- This reply was modified 2 months, 2 weeks ago by Xunzi_23.

::Three browsers I was using yesterday (without modifications or cleanup) were SeaMonkey, UngoogledChromium, and Slimjet.
All three of them were using between 500-700 MB virtual memory with 1-3 tabs open.
SeaMonkey no longer works on some sites; Facebook is one site that rejects SeaMonkey; for some people that’s an “advantage”.I really don’t have to concern myself with memory or processor consumption; I use different browsers and other tools for experience and variety (and my “geek curiosity”).

::I have not experimented with any BSD systems in a long time. The last one I can recall is that I grabbed an image of NomadBSD, which is a live implementation of a version of FreeBSD 13.0 and 13.1.
I grabbed FreeBSD-14.0-CURRENT-amd64-20230223-fe5c211ba873-261074-memstick.img with the hope of seeing
1) if it is recognized from USB at boot.
2) if this memstick can be run live or if it has to be installed. It’ll be interesting and maybe fun.
One positive of the BSDs is that they tend to be stable.
That’s great for production servers and for desktop environments that do not require a lot of installations, just an occasional application update. If I find anything of interest I’ll share it later.

::FreeBSD-14.0-CURRENT-amd64-20230223-fe5c211ba873-261074-memstick.img did not work out for my HP-14, neither did GhostBSD-22.06.18-XFCE.iso, but I’m going to try GhostBSD-22.06.18-XFCE.iso on my Dell and see if it does any better. The image did boot on the HP-14, but the X server did not start, it failed to initialize.

::I got GhostBSD to boot on the Dell; glad I thought of it!
Now I can at least experiment with it live; it’s a good looking, very stable system, typical of BSD.
I chose the XFCE edition; I don’t care for any of the GNOME varieties.--

Quite a few package changes from predominantly Bookworm repo since the last time I ran here.
I’m using SeaMonkey as my browser; this and Firefox ESR are the primary browsers here right now, unless I bring in my own.--

I’ll have to check again with Google Chrome. It may start up with fewer resources, but it quickly grows, and I’ve seen it grow even larger than what I see with Firefox.
The UngoogledChromium in particular definitely uses fewer resources than either Firefox or Google Chrome.
As you say, for many things, I also prefer Firefox and I’ve been using it since it first became a Mozilla family browser.
I also maintain my own copies of the current release, either a Beta or Developer Edition, and a Nightly Edition, and I keep them completely under my own personal management and control.--
