I enjoyed learning about your different computer setups and enjoy reading your comments.Thanks, I appreciate it. I’m basically reminding myself what I have tested. Also, since I was using my Acer Aspire 5 for so many days, on one hand I enjoy it because it’s my fastest Linux computer, on the other hand it doesn’t currently handle my antiX needs because my wireless network is not recognizing the connection with antiX.
I happened to come up with the idea of testing antiX on the Dell, then I decided to do the same with the oldest HP and finally the Lenovo laptop.
It’s kind of a history exercise for me but I am thankful that at least one person (you) mentioned enjoying the journey.
I still have the Lenovo laptop on my desk so I can fiddle with it tomorrow.

I downloaded @andyprough’s antiX libre respin that fits into a CD. I was able to pare down the iso without having to uninstall any programs. As a result, I was able to create an iso that contains both abrowser and seamonkey that came in at 635 MB, enough to fit into one of my old 650 MB CDs. I also learned how to update the libre kernel. @andyprough’s iso had the 4.9.309-gnu1 kernel. I was able to update to the 316 kernel and purge the 309 kernel.
Basically I had to sudo apt install
linux-firmware-image-4.9.316-gnu1 linux-image-4.9.316-gnu1 linux-libre-4-9and then sudo apt purge
linux-firmware-image-4.9.309-gnu1 linux-image-4.9.309-gnu1This kernel update and purge of the old kernel produced an iso snapshot of 637 MB.
I am running this antiX21 libre respin on this old laptop that I had bought brand new for my oldest son 8 years ago. He gave it back to me last year with the mouse touchpad broken and a broken hard drive. I run this antiX21 libre respin live as a CD. I also found a way to use the keyboard numeric pad as a mouse.

I think it’s an excellent idea and I look forward to trying it. Maybe it’ll be useful on either my Lenovo laptop or the HP laptop or desktop.
This also brings back memories. My second computer purchase was a Toshiba laptop and I used it for grad school between 1999-2001. When using the Web version of the online class I could run Linux but I used Windows NT or 2000 to access the classroom directly for formatting, rich text and download or upload of class materials.
Since it was a Master of Computer Information Systems I discussed Linux extensively and predicted that Linux would eventually dominate everything EXCEPT the desktop, a prediction that’s largely accurate, though it’s the kernel, not necessarily the environment that has made the most impact.

::I found out that most of the nonprogram disk space was taken up by the folder /user/share/locale. In your original iso, that folder took up I think 188 Mb of disk space. In my antiX21 64 bit system, that I am typing up this post from, this folder has 320 Mb. Since I am mainly fluid in english, I deleted every folder but the /usr/share/locale/en folder.
That wiped away almost all of the 188 Mb of disk space that the iso took. If a person uses a different locale, then keep that particular locale that you are using and then delete everything else. Or keep a few folders that are useful.
Then /usr/share/doc takes up a lot of space also. I copied that folder as a backup for future reference and then I deleted the entire folder.
I only use the antiX theme in slim/slimski. So I kept the /usr/share/slimski/antiX folder, but deleted every other folder in /usr/share/slimski
This next one is at your own risk. I deleted some of the folders in /usr/share/icons.
Oh, I see. Yes, these are very good things for you to do as an individual, as you know what you will be needing and wanting. But I don’t want to take them out of a respin, because I can’t anticipate which locale the downloader might be needing, and apparently deleting the man pages is considered bad form when releasing a distro or respin (for obvious reasons). But again, bravo to you for chopping it way down and making of it something that you liked. I’ve done many of the same deletions for my own personal use as well, especially the extra locales.

I drove my wife to an appointment because the location is on a hill. My wife Mary has a self-propelled wheel chair; normally she gets around herself. She *could* navigate to this place but it wouldn’t be easy, so the least I can do is help her; we do many things for each other.
We’re watching our nephew this evening, so I will get my computer time in when we get home after the appointment.

I’ve been using the info here to track and perform unscientific, off the cuff comparison of my various systems and configurations, and for that matter what others contribute here too.
I almost forgot about pinxi; it’s not as “universal” in terms of distributions including it as inxi, but I do recall that you have done very good work with it and your many other useful tools. I’ll have to take the time to get more of the tools in my standard toolchest once again.

::I’m back here as I noted previously with my Lenovo X201 laptop. Today I’ve used it with Seamonkey and Palemoon; with both of them I’ve set a few “compatibility flags” in about:config so that both Seamonkey and Palemoon behave in a manner similar to Firefox, which helps when I use Yahoo Mail and a few other things. If I DON’T set those flags, for example, with Yahoo Mail I have to use a previous “compatibility mode” because standard Seamonkey doesn’t use the usability flags that Mail expects, whereas with the Firefox compatibility flags set, both Palemoon and Seamonkey behave as “expected”.
Also I mentioned in this or another thread that with some workloads, various different generations of systems can appear to function as well or nearly as well as others. Though this system is STILL a solid, usable system, there’s no mistaking the performance on this one with any of my other systems. As far as my “really old” (10 years or more) systems, this is easily my best one. However, this one could benefit from an SSD instead of HDD and also some faster memory IF something would or could fit into the slots appropriately. I do know that an SSD instead of an HDD will work here because I loaned this system to my son a while back and while he had it, one of his friends suggested putting an SSD in here and he DID, BUT he ran Windows 10 or 11 on the SSD instead of what I had on this (I think I previously had PCLinuxOS installed). I’ve since put Distro: antiX-21-runit_x64-base Grup Yorum 30 October 2021 base: Debian GNU/Linux 11 (bullseye) on this hardware and it works well, but no mistake; this is not a super fast system any more, it’s just a solid, reliable system. With a few different (but compatible) parts, I think I could juice it up quite a bit at a nominal cost. I’m open to suggestions for either SSD, memory, or both that would work on this 2011 Lenovo X201 laptop; I posted the listing for it the other day… (I am now retired, so COST IS a significant consideration; If I change anything at all, it will probably be one thing at a time, and the costs have to be reasonable; moreover, I DO have other newer, faster equipment, so this is, by no means, something that I will definitely do, it’s merely a thought and a consideration, as time, money, and conditions permit).

::Brian, pinxi is the development branch of inxi, so nothing to forget, it’s the leading edge of inxi, I don’t use inxi since I’m developing it, the only time I run inxi is right before a release for next inxi to make sure I didn’t mess something up, and to test new features against the previous inxi output.
The only difference is that if you run and update pinxi, you’re always on the cutting edge, including occasional breaks, it’s similar to sid, and sometimes even experimental in terms of I don’t really care if something breaks short term. Though I try to avoid that since it’s much easier to use pinxi -U or pinxi -U 3 to update than to have to wget the file again because it’s crashing.
In terms of most development, it goes like this:

* inxi – feature complete, everything tested and works, pinxi, pinxi.1, and pinxi.changelog are copied to inxi, inxi.1, inxi.changelog, a few values switched or updated, and that’s next inxi.So basically, pinxi is as universal as sid, though most people should not run it since it’s unstable, though usually it’s fine, and inxi is like testing, almost like stable, but it’s more rolling than stable.
I post pinxi output since that’s what shows the new features I’m working on, and it’s also what I run anyway. I don’t recommend regular users use it, but everyone who contributes to pinxi/inxi runs it since that’s the only way you can get the new stuff, fixes, new features, etc, that we are testing at the time. In general what I don’t recommend users run is frozen inxi versions from frozen pools, because new features come out all the time, bug fixes, new hardware, etc, but it doesn’t really matter to me in any larger sense, it’s just more useful if the current master inxi is shipped, since that has all reported issues and bugs corrected, and new features, enhancements, etc.

::Thanks for the reminder and the details Harold. I have used the pinxi version a few times in the past, and when the time and occasion strikes, I may experiment with it more on occasion; it never hurts to have a few extra eyes testing, particularly since I do once again have four or five different versions of hardware that span at least 15 years of difference; who knows, that, and my background in testing, may occasionally be helpful, so if/when I get a chance, I may from time to time hack around; then again, I’m at an age where I tend to be a bit more “forgetful”; that’s why I create threads like this one; I can put my own system specs and tests here, and invite others to do the same; that keeps a few more of us “off the streets and out of trouble!”
Appreciate the many outstanding tools and utilities that you have authored over the years AND your precise attention to detail; thanks again for reminding me about your work and the addition explanation you have shared. Always a pleasure, thanks!

::This is a good time to test, some new features that required manual data table generation, lookup tables, not data from the system that is.
After updating to pinxi:
pinxi
pinxi -b

pinxi -v8the new gpu and cpu features are tripped with:

pinxi –gpu
pinxi –edid
pinxi –gpu –edidparticularly on older hardware, I’m looking for failures to give full cpu data, and failures to give some bits of the gpu data. Note some of those were left empty on purpose because the data was ambiguous and I could not nail it down enough to provide it as accurate and correct, but usually most of it is there, but getting cpu/gpu data is a royal pain in the butt, nobody has all of it in one place.
I hesitated adding that data because it ties me to permanent tracking of latest gpu and cpu data, but on the other hand, the tech has gotten so incredibly insanely difficult and expensive that they aren’t doing new cpus/gpus more than 1x a year, and often less, since it takes a few years to get to the next process node, like 3nm/tsmc 3n/intel 4, etc. So I’m hoping there to backfill missing data for old stuff, which will then never need updating once it’s finalized, and to only rarely have to do updates for new hardware. But not ideal, I always want to get live data from the system, not have to make it myself in a datatable which has to be manually updated.
