Ahh! Today inxi is matching, or coming pretty close to the other tools!

Hey, look at THIS! I ran inxi and pinxi 3-4 times, and it managed to find something releasing at least a “little bit” of memory!

When I say “a little bit”, I noticed reported memory at 1.32, 1.33, and 1.34 Gib at various points in time. Not huge, that’s for certain, but Google will snag more memory to provide a fast, efficient Web page caching, but based on these findings, it also shows that it’ll release resources too when they’re not being actively used. That’s pretty cool, and it’s the first time in a while that I’ve seen anything that clean and obvious, though it’s not the first time I’ve seen the overall Linux system operate well and efficiently.

Many years ago I had a Dell Dimension 4100 desktop system. When it was “young” it ran quite well, but as it aged and as the memory requirements of applications absolutely mushroomed in size (expanded greatly, like being gorged with water). Anyway that particular system as it aged would actually swap from time to time. The swapping algorithm was excellent; it wouldn’t swap out a task unless memory was completely full, then it wouldn’t shift back and forth unless it had to do so, but when it did, the operation was about as clean and effective as you could imagine.

Now, on this system with GOBS of memory to spare, we’re not even close to swapping, and the system isn’t going nuts adding and removing memory, yet when the browser itself (arguably the biggest single memory consumer on the entire system) doesn’t need a resource, it releases it without causing any major performance issue either when allocating or releasing the resource. Again, very good behavior of the browser, the operating system, and the interaction between them, and that’s why I thought it was “cool” to “watch this”, even without seeing the exact resource that was allocating or releasing resources.

These stories brought to you courtesy of your resident retired geek. One of my graduate courses, Operating Systems Theory, mentioned some studies in this area, including a resource called “Shared Memory”, which these processes are utilizing very well indeed.

We are beginning a reorganization of our Wi-Fi setup in our independent senior citizen community.
Not only do I have to make the changes in the next week or so, it turns out if I have five or six distinct instances, each of them must also be configured with a different Wi-Fi access point; that included our television and my Echo clock!

On my HP-14 and my Dell Inspiron 5558 I have several instances; I didn’t do all of them, and I have a few left on my HP-14, which I’m on now, but at least I have one or more accessible interface on every network device in our unit.

note, you guys should fix your message spam filters, I wrote a long reply and it rejected it as spam, and even worse, it told me it had rejected it as spam, which is really stupid, if you have a real message spam filter you don’t tell the spammers you caught them, that lets them craft the message to pass the filter.

Anyway, I’m not going to go line by line to figure out what made the stupid spam filter decide my technical response was spam, that takes forever, so consider that I explained what virtual memory, kernel pages, etc, are.

I really dislike spam stuff that breaks valid user stuff, it means you lost the game against the spammers, sad to say.

Here’s the response and explanation, I posted it on techpatterns.com forums:

Thank you for this detailed explanation! The newer versions of conky differs widely on the reported RAM used compared to the (much older) version used in antiX. I prefer the old version because it aligns more closely with that reported by ps_mem.py, which is the tool I always use for comparison purposes. But it always throws me off for a while when I boot into MX and see high memory usage reported by conky, before I remember it cant be directly compared to antix.

Interestingly I ran some memory stats the other day and the differences between them were minor, more attributed to unit of measure, GB vs GiB, MB, etc and even those differences were minor but I still appreciate the explanation, which is along the lines of my expectations; thanks h2.

The spam issues are probably the number one issue the forum software faces and you’re not the first to be greatly frustrated. If I know that I am writing a lengthy note I often write it in an editor or notepad for this reason.

Our senior community Wi-Fi changes yesterday seemed to work fine but I expect that the staff will be helping numerous people set up Tvs, Echo devices and computer systems for the next couple of weeks! Naturally we’re all set up since we’re the youngest residents and computer literate!

Made it through the day with the new wireless access point.

Multiple distribution computers will each have to get the new access point configured.

Right now I’m here with Endeavour OS. Previously I had it set up with Xfce but recently I changed it to KDE Plasma, just so I could re-familiarize myself with the work (not that I need it; Plasma is major overkill for me; the one thing I do appreciate about it, however, is the high degree of customization and configuration that is possible; I’ve always valued that trait in everything I use; if it isn’t customizable I look for something else.

On my HP-14 laptop this runs fine, but I definitely DON’T need all of it; I can make due. Tim Miller, my pal, loves PRETTY stuff; he puts nice looking, carefully fitted covers on his equipment and looks for displays that have decent brightness and plenty of pixels. I value his knowledge in those areas, even though I don’t personally need that stuff, but we enjoy chatting and therefore I look at this stuff occasionally.

                                  Miller, this one’s for you!

(GOTTA get back to something simple and light soon; I’ll be back in one of my antiX instances SOON!)
