I dowloaded the full, and dd to a USB stick like I do for all linux.
When I boot, I do not get any F keys, nor can I save anything.
I booted from this USB, and wanted to launch the live usb tool, but when clicking it nothing happens.
There does not seem to be a guide how to get the downloaded ISO to USB to obtain a live system with persistent keyboard and (natural) scrolling. How?

If you used “dd” then you have a read only file system and can’t save anything.

If you are booting UEFI, there are no “F” key menus, but there is a “customize” main menu entry that will do the same thing thru a series of menus.

you can use the live-usb-maker tool on the iso to clone itself onto a second usb stick, with all the normal antiX live USB features.

this video may help. the gui version of live-usb-maker may look a little different than what’s in the video, as that app has seen a lot of updates since the video.

I tried to use the live-usb-maker tool but except prompting for the password (demo) nothing gets launched, nor do I get an error message. What may I do wrong?

I forget if antiX asks for the root password or the user password with live-usb-maker. try the root password.

what version of antiX did you download? 17.1?

root password gives “incorrect password … try again” error.
              demo password nothing gets launched.
              downloaded 17.1
burn to USB with dd and bs=1024
also tried burn to USB with gnome-disk-utility / UDisks
USB = 16GB USB3 stick and 8GB USB2 stick (it should make no difference, but I tried both)

Is there a log I can look at to see what happens after the password screen goes?

                stranger and stranger.

                can you try running

                live-usb-maker-gui-antix

from a terminal and see what messages you get if any?

using menu > applications > system tools > live-usb maker

Version 7.1 downloaded from Germany and Netherlands did not work past inputting the password demo.
Version 7 downloaded from Netherlands worked using password demo.

From booted version 7 (NL) created live with ISO 7.1 (DE)

When booting 7.1 live with persistence as made above, live-usb maker does not get passed the password.

using command live-usb-maker-gui-antix (requires sudo but does not request password)
                  Works in version 7
Works in version 7.1 live with persistence as made above
works in version 7.1 made with DD from ISO

BUT: The GUI is a totally different GUI in 7.1 compared to 7.

                  I guess ???
On 7.1 GUI of live-usb maker launched from menu > applications > system tools > live-usb maker fails because it looks for the 7 GUI and does not find it ?

Could you check the md5sum of the 17.1 you originally used?

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

downloaded 17.1 full ISO from http://ftp.nuug.nl and several times from http://ftp.fau.de
                      It happened with each copy.
I do not know how to check md5sum

Do you have your stick plugged in?

Are you running off the dd usb device or is antiX installed?

running the (final) stick B with 17.1 + persistence. It was installed by stick A dd 17.1 ISO + live-usb-maker-gui-antix

So stick B does not show the F menus at boot menu?

                              No F keys at boot.
Only “full”, “custom”, “customize boot”, “advanced options”, “memory test”
                              I guess customize boot = F keys?

Yes, it must be an UEFI boot (mentioned by dolphin_oracle several posts up)
