A build using 19.3 recently completed does not recognise the wlan card I installed, although networking in general is working ok using a usb plug-in wlan adapter. I set up networking using the wifi-switch option on the antiX menu selecting Ceni as preferred handler and uninstalled connman.

The wlan card is a WTXUP TX-BCM94331CD 900mbps 2.4/5 ghz bluetooth 4.0 PCI-E-AC ver 3.0 and is installed into a PCIe- single lane slot and connected to a usb header on the mainboard.

After the first setup I installed kernel 5.10.27 over the default thinking to obtain headers that would recognise the wlan device, but I cannot recognise it in the inxi list.

All suggestions will be most welcome.

The steps I usually do to figure out Wifi problems is:

        1. See if wifi is identified in inxi with
        inxi -Nxx
there you should be able to see: A) Driver used (under driver: xxx), B) Device ID (under chip ID: XXXX:YYYY). I can start working with this.

        2. If I cannot find my wifi device in inxi, I first need to know if it is a USB wifi device or PCI device. If on laptops, most of them are pci devices, and I check the lspci output
        lspci -nn
Where I look (one item at a time) and also search the Device ID [XXXX:YYYY]
If it is a USB device, I use lsusb
        lsusb
        and check for ID XXXX:YYYY

once I have the chip ID, I search for it in https://linux-hardware.org/?view=search
XXXX:YYYY where Vendor ID: (XXXX) Device ID: (YYYY).
For example, one of my USB wifi devices: https://linux-hardware.org/?id=usb:7392-7811
You can see that it uses different drivers in different kernel versions.

Please, provide the Device ID following the methods above, and check to see if there is any support for it in Linux.

If you find difficulties, share the lspci and lsusb output and we will try to help.

Though your card should be PCI, as you describe, your inxi output shows on the USB devices:
        Device-1: 1-1.3:3 info: N/A type: Network driver: ath9k_htc interfaces: 1 rev: 2.0 speed: 480 Mb/s chip ID: 0cf3:9271 serial: <filter>
        https://linux-hardware.org/?id=usb:0cf3-9271
It says this in USB information, but it doesn’t seem to be detected by inxi (doesn’t appear in Network category).

Anyway, this device doesn’t match your described “WTXUP TX-BCM94331CD 900mbps 2.4/5 ghz bluetooth 4.0 PCI-E-AC ver 3.0”. Please provide lspci so we can try to figure this out correctly.

Having run your suggested search routine I get the attached results. It seems to be a known chipset, but is listed as Usb despite being plugged into a single lane PCIe slot? There is of course a cable linking it to a mainboard Usb header but I assumed that was to support the Bluetooth capability.

If you scroll down on the same page, you will see other people’s experience with this same device.
It seems that all systems running a linux kernel newer than 5.4 have experienced problems with this device.

Try installing and booting to a 4.19 kernel to see if you have better experience with the card.

I installed kernel 4.19.184 but the card is still not usable although inxi -Nxx recognises it as before. However Ceni does not see it, neither does network assistant.

The list of PCI slots shows 4 to be available one being the 1-lane slot occupied by this wlan card, the other 1-lane slot has a Sata-3 expansion card and the used 16-lane slot has a graphics card. What the other 2 slots in the list are I have no idea except they are unused.

Have you any further suggestions I might try? I have refrained from plodding through the remaining kernels offered although am happy to do so if you feel it may produce results.

At present I am using the internet with a plug-in usb adapter which is satisfactory but not a definitive solution.

Has my card got a well-known chipset onboard and if so is this problem likely to go away in the future or should I look for a more suitable wlan card? The one I chose for a previous build is fine using all the kernels I have tried and I feel I should have bought another.

When you do the inxi -Nxxx, is the Wifi USB adapter connected? I suspect that the original pci card you are testing, WTXUP TX-BCM94331CD, does NOT use a atheros wifi chip, but a broadcom chip (requiring a broadcom driver), and what we have been detecting and working to get working is the external USB wifi adapter, which was working before (I was dumb recommending to use a different kernel, as it seemed to be working for you before; sorry for that). Please investigate what chip comes with the device.

Searching for BCM94331CD it appears to be a chip for apple computers, but some sellers on ebay say it works on linux. The device ID (based on an internet search) should be 14e4:4331, which should be supported. Hopefully this isn’t the same issue as the previous case, where the wifi chip is missing or got disconnected during shipping.

The Usb wlan plugin adapter was connected when I ran inxi -Nxxx.

This is the text relating to the order I placed, the fact that only 4 were sold at that point may explain why it isn’t working on my install, or maybe why it is relatively cheap at 20 euros posted from China to Spain. I noticed at the time that AliExpress had a very poor choice of wlan cards on offer and as I know nothing about them I just chose this on the basis of availability.

The card appears complete as in the attached pictures.

                  € 20,27

Would you recommend my remaining with kernel 4.19.184 or should I revert to the kernel in the 5.10 range that I installed to begin with?

Sadly I have been unable to get the tiny pictures to transmit successfully but they only show what you would expect to see, a complete card with chipset mounted and a sort of heat sink. The driver dvd that came with it will not mount, a failing I have experienced before with these things coming from China but it normally never causes any trouble because it will I suppose contain a Windows and Mac driver library.

You are right. I thin I found the device you bought and it does say it includes the chip.
Try opening it, disconecting the chip, cleaning it a bit, reconnecting it again and setting it up as before the cleaning, and again connecting it to the desktop.
Share witth us the lspci -nn output to see if its being detected by the system, and we can confirm the device ID.

I ran these lists with the offending pci-e wlan card installed and the plug-in usb wlan adapter unplugged. The snaps show the card both sides, I refrained from disconnecting it as the usb header is inconveniently located, but I can say there seems to be no way of unplugging the chip from the wlan card itself, it has a tin cover which seems fairly well fixed on. The reverse side shows two brass terminals which may even be screw heads or rivets. I am always deterred from pulling things apart unless the assembly method is clear. It was and is firmly located in the pci-e slot and the cable in the usb header.

I think there is a problem with the chip, or the card itself, as it doesn’t even show in the lspci output.
Try contacting the seller, but I don’t think they will help much. Ask them at least how to open the heat plate, if it is even possible.
Except if you can test it on Windows or a Mac, I think this card will not work, unfortunately

If your wifi USB adapter worked properly on kernel 5.X, you can upgrade again to that kernel.

Thanks for your efforts Xecure, I shall waste no more of your or my time with it, and you will be right, there will be little response from China although I will mention it to AliExpress who will doubtless be concerned to learn that one of their sellers is selling rubbish.

                              Hi Roland,

Do you have another slot available on your motherboard to test this Wi-Fi card? I already found a new motherboard with a defective RAM and PCI memory slot.

                              Olá Roland,

Você possui outro slot disponível na sua placa-mãe para testar esta placa Wi-Fi? Eu já encontrei placa-mãe nova com defeito em slot de memória RAM e PCI.

                                Hi Roland,
Before you write things like there will be little response from China although I will mention it to AliExpress who will doubtless be concerned to learn that one
of their sellers is selling rubbish.

Test the board slot with a known working card.
Test the card you have in another computer, also under Windows, better Vers 7 than 10 too.

Cheapskating: You searched for lowest possible price from china and not for a product claimed or in any way garanteed to work with any linux version.

If you are absolutely sure the card is defective, that is after testing as above you should consider the possibility of production defect, transport damage too.

Then you can contact the seller in a mannerly fashion, carefully explain the situation and ask for help.

Should you use the style from your forum post boldly claiming he sold you rubbish he would be as likely to help you as I would in his situation, simply not at all.

Rouge sellers and assholes are far more common in other countrys than china, remember the sellers there have family honor and reputation to lose as well as the need
to keep there family fed and clothed.

I have had more disgusting experiences with German local purchases than with any I have made in CN. Much worse and way way more expensive in terms of financial loss..

You are quite right Moddit, and I can confirm that my success rate with Chinese PC products has been consistently high.

I recently built 2 top-end PCs entirely from new or refurb components sourced from China via AliExpress, and apart from this card have had only one case of non-delivery and reimbursement was immediate once they recieved my notification.

I consider the components I bought to be the best value and performance for money available in the marketplace. I shall hang onto this card and try it out in new circumstances when I have a suitable mainboard and PC available, as I feel sure it actually can be made to work. The reason I did not remove the cover was to ensure its returnability, but the time is now past so I may now have a look inside.

Without the Chinese manufacturing and supply capabilities the PC and telecomms world would be in a sorry state.
