      I had one LXTerminal window open. Somehow it closed. It was not possible to open another window of LXTerminal or another program.
      What are possible causes?
      RAM seemed ok in Conky.

        Hi, If you have data on the system pls MAKE A BACKUP if you hve not already done so.
        My first action would be to add another user, if system works ok with that either transfer your files to that user or delete the hidden local config files in your original setup and see if that solves the problem. If local files are broken you can copy over from your newly created working user.

        If a fresh installation, make sure the download is not corrupt (sha256sum) then reinstall.
        If you are concerned a drive might be failing you can read out data with smartctl, results are subject to interpretation but plenty of info in the net on usage.
