I’m playing around with different desktop environments & window managers on a
      single-core Intel Atom netbook.

On a fresh install of antixcore32-XFCE, the Desktop icons have a “halo” around
the label associated with them, like in the attachment below.

How do I remove this ?

those are set by the system theme. on many themes, if the compositor/transparency is enabled, those “halos” become transparent.

Have a look at Pimp tip 4

          xubuntu-pimp

Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.
