Hi, all-
When I select mp3 files, xmms starts playing automatically. When I select .aac files nothing happens. Do I need a plugin to play aac files with xmms?
Thanks!

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

This is an rpm file, but it shows that you do need a plugin.
Have a go with qmmp, maybe more luck there

::Thanks for all your replies. Here’s a summary of my situation:
In MX Linux, I usually listen to online aac radio streams with Audacious medial player. While working with antiX, I’ve also downloaded this app. But I’ve noticed that when I click on an mp3 file, xmms automatically opens up and starts playing. It is also able to play mp3 audio streams if you paste in the url in the ‘location’ box. However, it does NOT do anything with aac files or streams. So this has started me searching.
@anticapitalista’s suggestion to try playing with celluloid or mpv helped me along. While celluloid could play streaming audio, it has a large memory footprint probably because it is a video player and so has more overhead. mpv has no interface to input a url that I could find, so I can’t use it for streaming.
I discovered an included app, moc which is launched from terminal with ‘mocp’ command. It does the job for me so far, able to input a url with CTRL+u key combo. My original problem is solved.
I next turned my attention to the launching of aac files using the right mouse click. By adding a .audio_aac folder into
/home/demo/.config/rox.sourceforge.net/SendTo/
Directory and symlink-ing /usr/share/applications/mpv.desktop into the .audio_aac folder and renaming it to “Open with mpv”, I am now able to right-click on any aac file and have the option to open it with mpv app.
It’s a bit of a hack job but works okay for me.
@jing-jo’s suggestion is a bit tough for me to convert rpm to deb at the moment but thanks anyway.
@xecure suggestion of xmms2 – I’ve download and installed but it’s completely cls mode and I’ll have to learn how to configure this.
So I’ll stick with my solution so far and try to create a moc.desktop script later so I can click on it and open the program instead of firing up a terminal all the time.
Once again, Thanks to everyone for pitching in.

Hi @DonC,
I use mpv to stream all the time. In terminal, type mpv <url link>.For example:
mpv https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jn8Ji0g5RsYou will have to pay attention to the resolution of the video. Our antix forum has many topics on video resolution using mpv.
Thanks.June 26, 2021 at 7:01 am #62342MemberDonC
::Hi @calciumsodium –
Thanks for your input. I did this:
$ mpv https://23153.live.streamtheworld.com/SMOOTH953_AAC48.aac (+) Audio --aid=1 (aac 2ch 44100Hz) AO: [alsa] 48000Hz stereo 2ch float A: 00:00:02 / 00:00:32 (7%) Cache: 30s/511KB File tags:and now I’m listening online through the terminal…
Lots of good stuff to discover still in antiX!
