[solved] Xorg and non-root startx?

I’ve never built xorg without a display manager and hoping someone has done it and can assist.

Using antix-core 21, I have installed xorg (cli-aptiX), xinit, and twm. No display manager. root works fine, but normal user account doesn’t–account has video and the default group memberships from the installer. Farted around with xserver-xorg-legacy as well.

It’s a big ask, but after a week of experimentation, I am not sure that I am even on the right path or that it can be done with the current state of Debian.

You should have this file: /etc/X11/Xwrapper.conf

Add this line at the bottom:
needs_root_rights=yes

Now I am betting it will work for a non-root user.

Thank you and you are correct, it works!

I had dinked around with Xwrapper.conf but it is a new package for me. I had no idea what I was doing.

For anyone else wanting to use Xorg without a display manager this is how I did it.

1. Using cli-aptiX install xorg (148)
2. apt install xserver-xorg-legacy twm xfonts-cyrillic
3. per @christophe, update /etc/X11/Xwrapper.conf with
needs_root_rights=yes
4. nano ~/.xinitrc

xterm &
exec twm

I choose to use twm for testing. It’s tiny with little to no deps.
