Colonel Panic
Hi there everyone. I’ve recently installed AntiX 19 after a hiatus (some of you might remember me from about 9 years ago), and want to avoid having to see this again when I boot up;
xserverrc /usr/bin/x not found line 3
It may seem premature to talk about a problem I haven’t encountered yet with the current installation, but when I have encountered it in the past it has spelt doom for my AntiX installation and I’ve had to wipe the partition and install something else.
Can anyone tell me how to fix it if and when it happens again?
Thanks in advance,
CP .

::Which antiX-19? Full, Base, Core, Net? SysV, Runit? 64-bit? 32-bit? Stable? Testing? sid?
More information please.
Share your output of:
inxi -Fxzr
And why antiX-19? antiX-21 is current.
Thank you,

Unless antiX21 won’t run correctly, you should install it instead of antiX19.
We won’t know if you will get the same error as 9 years ago until you try it, but it makes sense to use the current software unless there is a good reason not to.

Q. Which antiX-19? Full, Base, Core, Net? SysV, Runit? 64-bit? 32-bit? Stable? Testing? sid?
A. Full, 64-bit. I just did a standard install, so I assume it’s AntiX stable.
I don’t know which init it uses, but again I assume in the absence of any other information that it uses SysV because I didn’t tell it to use anything else when I installed it.
Here’s my output for inxi -Fxzr;

Thank you for replying.
I can see now that my initial post was misleading, so apologies. The “9 years ago” refers to my participation on the AntiX forum. My last use of AntiX was a lot more recent than that, but at the time I struggled with registering on the forum to report the problem (which I’ve now overcome).

::Q. Did xwindows work?
Did you get the error you were talking about?
A. So far it’s fine, thanks.

::Ok, thanks for posting the inxi output. That helps.
Is this the same machine on which you installed antiX before? Which version of antiX did you install before, on which you got the error message?
It is likely a glitch with the graphics hardware and the driver module chosen by the installer. But this is just a guess without more information. Did you save the x.org log file from before when you got the error?
Can you run a LiveUSB with antiX-21-Full 64-bit?

::Since I’ve been called into question for still using AntiX 19; one reason I do so is that I still use software which relies on QT4. My understanding is that Debian Bullseye (and I assume AntiX 21 too) has dispensed with QT4 and uses QT5 exclusively.

Thanks again.
“Did you save the x.org log file from before when you got the error?”
No I didn’t. I can probably get the other information (machine used), version of AntiX) from the “Other distros” thread on the Puppy forums, but it may take a while.

I understand that completely. I also run some older versions for similar reasons. But we are troubleshooting here so we need more information. Thus the possibility of running antiX-21 on LiveUSB. We can probably learn something from that.
As to running QT4 apps on antiX-21 (Bullseye) I cannot answer. Someone else may have some input on that subject.

::What is the QT4 package in question?
Can you install it from the repos? And if you do, does everything still work?
You might be able to install it also onto a flashdrive with antiX21 to see if it is available and works there, as well.

That makes me think you are fine. I looks to me that in the past you somehow uninstalled (removed) xorg.
The thing to remember, in my opinion, is to read the apt removal statements very carefully when installing software. Debian & antiX stable repos should be safe, but other stuff may cause conflicts that causes something you need, to be removed. So read it and be sure before you hit Y/enter.Rule number one = Ask here first before removing xorg! 🙂
confirmed antiX frugaler, since 2019

Thanks for replying Bob (again).
Mainly Portabase, a database program (and no, it isn’t in the repos of AntiX 19; I’ve checked). I’ve used it since my days with Puppy and all my files are in that format.
