      Development Status (March 2017)
      Development has moved from SourceForge to GitHub, the code has been updated to support Qt 5, and a port to Android is currently in beta testing. Good progress has been made on automating builds and releases, so I plan to release a small update soon for all supported platforms in order to better support recent OS releases. If you would like to contribute, or have suggestions on ways to make it easier to contribute, please contact me.

      That is a quote from 2017. Perhaps the move to QT5 is finished by now? Maybe try installing the Debian deb file on a LiveUSB for testing.

      Debian/Ubuntu Installation
      Install the portabase package from the main package repository. Alternatively, download the .deb package for the desired release and install it as root using dpkg -i <filename>.

      This is the nice thing about antiX LiveUSB. You can experiment and learn what works for you before you “install” antiX to your machine.

      I’ve done a lot of database development for my own business. I always use a common file format so that I can move the data to new applications when needed. PortaBase does support CSV and XML so it will not be difficult to move the data. And it is a flat file system so that is also good for moving to new applications. LibreOffice Base could handle your flat file database quite well should you choose to do so in the future.

      But maybe PortaBase will keep up with Debian and you can stay with it.

      Good luck with your database and I hope you’ll be able to move to antiX-21 soon.

        There is also this:

        https://www.onworks.net/software/app-portabase

        allowing you to run your PortaBase in the cloud.

        My database software also has an Application Server that can managed/hosted remotely so this is not unusual. A lot of people use a web based “host”. This may work for you if PortaBase does not keep up with Debian after Buster is EOL.

          It’s best to use packages that are well supported. Repology doesn’t show any distro with a recent version included. You could write the author and see if he knows where you can find a Debian .deb package of recent or current code which looks to be QT5. If not, you could ask if he could create one or knows someone that would.

          Otherwise, if it were me, I would export my data to .csv and import it into a spreadsheet or other supported database. Most data storage/retrieval programs can read .csv files

          At minimum, I would use whatever system I had still able to run Portabase and export a backup copy of the data to .csv and put it aside in case the system running it ever fails.

            Apologies for not answering before; I got distracted. I’ve discovered I can still run Portabase in Ubuntu 18 (which still has some time left to run), so it’s safe for the time being. I might try and build it in a later version of Debian (I’m posting from Siduction at the moment), using the gits of both Portabase itself and metakit, which is its main dependency.

            Wordfence blocked this as a separate post for some reason so I’m copy / pasting it into here;

            Christophe said;

            “That makes me think you are fine. I looks to me that in the past you somehow uninstalled (removed) xorg.
            The thing to remember, in my opinion, is to read the apt removal statements very carefully when installing software. Debian & antiX stable repos should be safe, but other stuff may cause conflicts that causes something you need, to be removed. So read it and be sure before you hit Y/enter.

            Rule number one = Ask here first before removing xorg! 🙂”

            Thanks Christophe. If I did remove XOrg it was certainly unintentional.

            I’ve had this happen after carrying out a full system upgrade though; maybe I need to be more careful about doing those in AntiX in future, just as Arch users have to be (Arch is notorious for breaking when you try and just upgrade the whole thing at once)?

            I think I’ll just leave it from now on and assume that I’m fine using XOrg in AntiX unless I discover otherwise.

            Best wishes (and to everyone else who’s replied to my posts),

            CP .
