I have had the same problem on two of my three older Macs. One is an iMac (mid 2014) and the other is a old black style Mac Book. Not sure if this relates to any other non-Mac installs but wanted to document it in case it can help someone else.
In the xorg log the error message is: display device not found and unloading module (same for all the display devices). Long story short, to fix this problem deleted the xorg vesa module.
My only question is what’s going on here? I know it’s Apple hardware but this does seem strange.

::I’m not sure about your level of expertise, but a good place to start to look at Xorg is the page https://manpages.org/xorg
Also:
“The Xorg server config files can be found in a range of locations. These are documented fully in the xorg.conf (5) manual page. The most commonly used locations are shown here. Server configuration file. Server configuration file. Server configuration file. Server configuration file. Server configuration file. Server configuration directory.” (from “Where do I find Xorg config files?”, which I found on a Yahoo search), which also came from related documentation within the overall xorg documentation.There may be a way to run the xorg process and configure the devices used, and possibly manually insert the missing device, if it is detected OR if you know what it is and what the necessary pointer (reference) is in order for the X server to access your device.
Others who may know more are welcome to add to this and provide additional suggestions.

::Thanks for the reply Brian.
I’m not sure about my level of experience either. LOL. Maybe an advanced beginner. Trying to do things the hard way… just for my own benefit.
I’ll take a closer look at the xorg docs. Didn’t see anything last time that seemed to pertain to this issue.

::It looks like there may be an option in the Xorg setup – IF you start it manually, to search for devices, and also save it into a configuration file.
By default, it typically tries to start up automatically, but still has provisions to overwrite the configuration.
Assuming the hardware on your device IS supported, it will be possible to detect it and configure it.I’ve done this in the past, but it’s been a long time that it’s worked automatically, so it has been more than a decade, closer to TWO decades, since I had to set up my own configuration file; meanwhile, MANY things HAVE changed!
