      Dear Robin, dear Marcelocripe,

      I don’t understand the translation of yad-updater anymore.

      I copied and pasted the English words into French to use the correct inverted commas for both buttons;
      1) ‘Manual’ update
      2) ‘Automatic’ update.

      I have converted the yad-updater.po file to yad-updater.mo several times and it does not work. Both buttons do not update.
      I put the yad-updater.mo file in the /usr/share/locale/fr_BE/LC_MESSAGES directory.
      I don’t know what to do anymore. It’s not the translation because I’m using the inverted commas from the original English version for the 2 buttons.

      Can you please help me?

      Best regards,
      Wallon

        I forgot to say that I had tested in the localisation;

        $ locale
        LANG=fr_BE.UTF-8
        LANGUAGE=fr_BE
        LC_CTYPE=fr_BE.UTF-8
        LC_NUMERIC=fr_BE.UTF-8
        LC_TIME=fr_BE.UTF-8
        LC_COLLATE=fr_BE.UTF-8
        LC_MONETARY=fr_BE.UTF-8

          Many thanks, @Wallon
          for reporting this issue. I’ll look into it and let you know as soon I’ve found out what is causing your trouble.
          Best regards

            Dear @Wallon ,
            here the results:

            For me it works properly on antiX 22 (there seems no yad updater for me present at antiX 23, but I’m still on alpha, maybe this has changed on beta). Running Version 3.3 by PPC. 19/January/2023 of yad-updater as present in most recent antiX 22 repo (didn’t ever change anything besides constantly apt-upgrading from time to time).

            All testing was done on antiX 22 full, (32bit).

            For my testing I’ve downloaded the .po type file for fr_BE “for use” from transifex (revision date MAR 26th 2023, 16:13), and then let poedit create a mo file from it without doing any modifications to the file content. Then I’ve copied the resulting .mo file (renamed to yad-updater-mo) to the /usr/share/locale/fr/LC_MESSAGES folder and started yad-updater using a Belgian french console environment:

            yad-updater french

            Btw, you could use the replacements for the quotation I’ve mentioned here https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/antix-23-beta1-runit-full-64bit-for-testing/page/7/#post-103017 to meet the french common quoting style. All of the typographic replacements should work fine. I’ve checked out in poedit the replacement of the qouting style, using the typographic replacements:

            yad-updater french

            yad-updater french

            $ locale
            LANG=fr_BE.UTF8
            LANGUAGE=
            LC_CTYPE="fr_BE.UTF8"
            LC_NUMERIC="fr_BE.UTF8"
            LC_TIME="fr_BE.UTF8"
            LC_COLLATE="fr_BE.UTF8"
            LC_MONETARY="fr_BE.UTF8"
            LC_MESSAGES="fr_BE.UTF8"
            LC_PAPER="fr_BE.UTF8"
            LC_NAME="fr_BE.UTF8"
            LC_ADDRESS="fr_BE.UTF8"
            LC_TELEPHONE="fr_BE.UTF8"
            LC_MEASUREMENT="fr_BE.UTF8"
            LC_IDENTIFICATION="fr_BE.UTF8"
            LC_ALL=

            So I have no clue what could cause it failing for you. Please check it on a virgin Live antiX 22 USB stick, maybe it works there, and then at least you know some modification on your installed system causes the issue.

            Manny greetings

              Thank you Robin,

              I did the tests on antiX 23 Beta.

              I was going to do an installation of my po file on an en_US installation as I suspect it is not from the translation as you are proving that other characters like the double chevrons « and » can be used.

              I did not use poedit.
              I used the command;

              $ msgfmt yad-updater.po -o yad-updater.mo

              Does it make a difference?

              I’m going to do a test on antiX 22.

              It’s incomprehensible this thing!

              Kind regards,
              Wallon

                I used the command;
                $ msgfmt yad-updater.po -o yad-updater.mo
                Does it make a difference?

                No, I’ve just retried. It works all the same using msgfmt instead of poedit.

                Please check whether the version number of yad-updater has changed on antiX 23 beta. If so, the existing translation files might be incompatible. The version string in yad updater script head as present on antiX 22 reads: Version 3.3 by PPC. 19/January/2023

                ————–
                Update:
                Have for testing copied yad-updater script from antiX 22 to antiX 23 (as said, I’m still on alpha. Will need some time to switch to beta…)

                FT-10-Menu-Entry
                FT-10-Menu-Entry

                Works fine for me on antiX 23 full (64 bit) also, even when using the typographic double guillemots in the translated strings instead of American style single qouting.

                  I don’t understand anything because on antiX 23 alpha it didn’t work for me. Anticapitalista also tried it and it didn’t work.
                  On antiX 23 beta it doesn’t work for me.
                  So it wasn’t a translation problem.
                  Linux is too complicated for me!

                    As said, I’m still on 23 alpha. Will retest this issue as soon as I’ve managed to switch to on 23 beta next days and let you know my findings.

                    Maybe this is a general yad issue? I get various error messages and warnings on antiX 23 alpha already when running yad scripts from console. If the deprecations all these warnings are about took place in 23 beta already, this could be a possible reason.

                      Dear Robin,

                      For me, it doesn’t work for Antix 22 either.
                      I hope it will work for other French users.
                      There is something TOP SECRET that I don’t understand.

                      I will continue to use:

                      sudo apt update,

                      sudo apt upgrade.

                      I leave that for the developers.

                      Kind regards,
                      Wallon

                        Olá Wallon e Robin.

                        Hello Wallon and Robin.

                        Sorry Wallon, I’m too late on this topic. But, if you had sent me an email, maybe I could have responded faster.

                        My suggestion is that you use the command to create the “.pot” file from the version of the script you are testing:

                        bash –dump-po-strings yad-updater | xgettext -L PO -o yad-updater.pot –

                        Add UTF-8 in the “yad-updater.pot” file:

                        sed -i ‘0,/charset=CHARSET/s//charset=UTF-8/’ yad-updater.pot

                        Create the “yad-updater.po” file for the “fr_BE” language:

                        msginit -l fr_BE -i youtube_downloader.pot -o yad-updater.po

                        Now, copy the texts from the “.po” file you downloaded from Transifex to your new “yad-updater.po” file.

                        If you look carefully, you will surely see that your new “.po” file is different from the “.po” file you downloaded from Transifex. This could be one of the reasons it never works.

                        The other suggestion is not to include any kind of quotes. Have you ever thought that those quotes are not even necessary for our languages?

                        The other suggestion is to copy the same type of quotes from the English language and use in the text “fr_BE” as you said you did.

                        I hope this will help you.

                        – – – – –

                        Olá Wallon e Robin.

                        Desculpe-me Wallon, eu cheguei muito tarde neste tópico. Mas, se você tivesse me enviado um e-mail, talvez eu poderia ter respondido mais rápido.

                        A minha sugestão é que você utilize o comando para criar o arquivo “.pot” a partir da versão do script que você estiver testando:

                        bash –dump-po-strings yad-updater | xgettext -L PO -o yad-updater.pot –

                        Adicionar o UTF-8 no arquivo “yad-updater.pot”:

                        sed -i ‘0,/charset=CHARSET/s//charset=UTF-8/’ yad-updater.pot

                        Criar o arquivo “yad-updater.po” para o idioma “fr_BE”:

                        msginit -l fr_BE -i youtube_downloader.pot -o yad-updater.po

                        Agora, copie os textos do arquivo “.po” que você baixou do Transifex para o seu novo arquivo “yad-updater.po”.

                        Se você observar com calma, certamente verificará que o seu novo arquivo “.po” é diferente do arquivo “.po” que você baixou do Transifex. Isso pode ser um dos motivos de nunca funcionar.

                        A outra sugestão é não incluir nenhum tipo de aspas. Você já pensou que aquelas aspas nem são tão necessárias para os nossos idiomas?

                        A outra sugestão é copiar o mesmo tipo de aspas do idioma Inglês e utilizar no texto “fr_BE”, como você disse que fez.

                        Eu espero que isso te ajude.

                          Dear All,

                          I discovered something strange in the installation of antiX 22.
                          Look at my screenshot, there is a directory fr_BR just for the file yad-agenda.mo.
                          What is this?
                          On my antiX 22 system, FT10 is installed.
                          I really like Brazil but I think there is a serious problem.
                          Maybe there is a link to the difficulties in getting yad-updater to work properly in French?

                          Cordialement,
                          Wallon

                            Dear Wallon,

                            On my antiX 22 system, FT10 is installed.

                            Could you by any chance fire up an antiX 22 full Live from a virgin ISO and check whether the issue you have with translations in yad-updater there also exists? Meanwhile I reckon it must be some additional software you’ve installed which messes things up and interferes.

                            yad-agenda … I really like Brazil but I think there is a serious problem.

                            This looks to me like a typo in a manually built program package, since it would represent „French as spoken in Brasil”. OK, this even exist in real life, but Debian doesn’t support this special language, see content of the file /usr/share/i18n/SUPPORTED

                            So, please check the true language by applying msgunfmt on it (works the same way you are used to with msgfmt) and looking into the file which true language it contains, and then move the file to the proper system language folder, either fr_BE or pt_BR.

                            Great you’ve caught the issue, so @PPC can fix his script package.

                            But I don’t see any connection to the yad-updater issue by now, since yad-agenda is a separate gettext-domain.

                            Windows is like a submarine. Open a window and serious problems will start.

                              Dear Marcelocripe, Dear Robin,

                              I have several USB sticks with antiX 22 and it does not work.
                              I have removed all quotes in all translations. There are no more warnings in Transifex. I even removed parentheses.
                              Look at my screenshot. French without any special marks. To make a French translation simpler than this is not possible.
                              The 2 buttons do not work at all.

                              Kind regards,
                              Wallon

                                Dear Wallon,

                                Despite what you think I think about you, I got curious about your problems using the updater in french and made a few tweaks. Please download the compressed file and run it, with the original updater localization. It should work.
                                Please report back. If this file works for your, I’ll ask anticapitalista to update the version that is in the repository…

                                Despite the fact that translators should avoid using special characters that are not on the original text, I realize that the apostrophe is used in french, so I tweaked the warning message, so it should now be correctly processed, allowing you to use the updater in french
                                I hope it works- if it does, you’ll probably see a strange apostrophe on the error message that appears if you cancel the update (please do run the manual update and first press n to cancel it, to check out the error message. Then you can update any way you like!)

                                P.

                                  Dear PCP,

                                  Thank you for your file.
                                  I just installed antiX 22. It’s a fresh install.
                                  I tested and it works for the bottom right button “Manual Upgrade” but everything is English.
                                  I answered no for manual update and a new window popped up.
                                  Is it normal that everything is in English?

                                  Best regards,
                                  Wallon
