I did a lot of testing.
I put the 2 characters \\ in front of the apostrophes in French.
I converted the *.po file into a *.mo file without any problem.
The PPC program does not manage to display the French apostrophe and the error message is not displayed correctly if you refuse the manual update. One is always obliged to replace the French apostrophe by another sign which does not interfere with the Bash code.
So, I haven’t found a solution to make the French language work in this program. We have to keep the PPC solution for the moment.

Dear PPC,

I have very good news for you!
I have not changed anything in the code of your file (zip file).
Look at my screenchot. All the apostrophes are good in French and it doesn’t block your program.
I replaced the normal apostrophe with a “typographic” apostrophe.
I used LibreOffice which puts the “typographic” apostrophe directly when you type in French.
I opened the *.po file with Geany.
I copied the “typographic” apostrophe from LibreOffice into Geany.
The Bash code goes over the “typographic” apostrophe as if it were a simple letter of the alphabet.
I have found on my Belgian azerty keyboard, the shortcut to get this “typographic” apostrophe.
There are 3 keys = Shift key + AltGr + b
It’s not practical but it’s a great discovery for all of us.
I will have to process all my translations on Transifex in this way but it will take me a lot more time!

This is exactly what I had suggested from the very beginning. Use typographic replacements for all the problematic characters. Great to read it works finally for you also.

Dear Robin,

I did a long search to find the “typographic” apostrophe on my keyboard.

Everybody talks about the keyboard shortcut for Ubuntu in French on the internet – it’s AltGr + G.

But this keyboard shortcut does not work at all in antiX.

I had to start my first tests with Windows. Yes, it’s very easy with Windows, the keyboard shortcut is everywhere on the internet. It’s a shame to have to translate Linux files into French with Windows!

On my keyboard, the 4 key gives the normal (right) apostrophe of the bash code. Is it possible to convert the 4 key to have the typographic (curved) apostrophe? It would be easier for translators.

please re-read my linked postings: I told you to use “ctrl+shift+u”, and then enter the key code I had provided, followed by “enter”, to get the typographic character for testing purposes straight away.

OK, the french linux keyboard actually lacks of exactly this character:

(While it has some very useful additional special characters not present on the German layout, which instead provides direct access to the typographic apostrophe by “Shift+AltGR+n”.)

Dear anticapitalista,

I have modified Transifex after all our findings for [fr] and [fr_BE].
I validate the PPC program, nothing needs to be changed.
I redid all the tests on antiX22 after modifying Transifex for [fr] and [fr_BE].
Everything works!
The double chevron quotes are not used by the bash code. So no problem.
The “typographic” apostrophe works very well with the bash code.
Here are the screenshots after modification in Transifex.

Dear translators,

I’ve noticed that many translated languages use the English apostrophe. It has a straight form. This apostrophe is reserved for bash code!

{'} used by developers

You should change your translations to use the “typographic” apostrophe. It has a curved shape.

{’} used by translators

If you answer no to the update, the program may block or not display a window with your text or display a window with apostrophes replaced by a grave accent.

This is not easy to see on the screen, zoom in on your screen to see the difference.

Important note; deepl and google translation do not differentiate between the 2 apostrophes. It is always the English apostrophe that is used in the translations.

A good translator is worth two, as they say in my country.

Dear Wallon.

Thank you very much for your effort and commitment to the “yad-updater” program and even more for not giving up. All this difficulty served as a valuable lesson for you and this topic will serve as reference for future volunteer translators.

An interesting note: I think the French and German keyboards are beautiful, because both are fully translated into their respective languages. While here I have a bad adaptation of the English keyboard to the Brazilian Portuguese language. The ABNT 2 standard has not even translated the names of the keys, they are all written in English and this only raises doubts for people because they don’t know what they are for because they don’t understand the English language.

Uma observação interessante: Eu acho lindo o teclado francês e alemão, porque ambos estão todo traduzido para os respectivos idiomas. Enquanto eu tenho aqui uma péssima adaptação do teclado Inglês para o idioma Português do Brasil. O padrão ABNT 2 sequer traduziu os nomes das teclas, estão escritas todas em Inglês e isso só gera dúvidas para as pessoas por não saberem para que servem porque não compreendem o idioma Inglês.
