      Hello,
Youtube crashes my system from time to time. Both from Firefox and SMtube.
      Any ideas or solutions?

You should experiment to try to find out what is causing it. Is it just with certain settings or all? Certain videos or all?

To try to avoid it, try playing with smtube with nothing else running. If it can’t do that there could be some other issue…

It’s a random thing, the second or third video viewed on SMtube crashes. I kill SMtube but the video keeps playing until I turn the system off.
I have deleted .config/smtube but it still happens.

Youtube crashes my system from time to time. Both from Firefox and SMtube.

Hum, you have an ok CPU (although you are running a 32bits system) and 2 Gb of RAM – your system should be able to handle even streaming YouTube in Firefox…
It may be some graphics card problem? Does that also happen when you play off line video files? What quality are you trying to play the videos on?
Also by “crash” you mean the computer restarts? Freezes? turns off?
My now long dead 32bits desktop, when it began having hardware problems froze when I was using YouTube – then I noticed it also froze when I was not using YouTube, as soon as I did something that made it work a bit more, it just froze on me…

Edit: we posted at the exact same time – ok, your “system” does not crash – only the process that is being used to play the video gets “stuck”… when this happened to me (“the video keeps playing”- in my case, usually the audio) is because the CPU is maxing out… Try useing, in smtube, a lower video quality, and see how that works…

            P.

Please see if there are any errors showing in
              /home/yourusername/.desktop-session/current.log and last logs

also try deleting cache data in home, if you wish you can delete everything, applications will recreate
automagicaly. After moving cache to temp the kind of issue you described ceased to happen.

the cache area is often huge and misused by applications for permanent storage, the graphics cache works
as a kind of supercooky, chrome based browsers are worst culprits, includes vivaldi.

Hi, you mentioned that you kill SMTube but the video keeps playing.

                1) How did you attempt to kill SMTube?
I often use terminal so I guess the command would look like
                pkill -9 smtube
The switch ‘-9’ ensures the killing is used with “more force” and less niceness.

                2) Could you monitor memory and CPU usage when this happens (you expect this to happen)?
BTW, you could start the SMTube with lower priority as far as access to (the CPU+RAM) resources is concerned.
                /usr/bin/nice smtube &

                3) Is it possible to switch a virtual terminal when the crash occurs?
                Typically accessible via pressing ‘Ctrl+Alt+F[1-6]’.
If yes, then you may login and explore the current state, probably save some info to TXT file (or take a picture using mobile phone, if it has a camera).
E.g. redirecting STDOUT of some commands to text files ‘df -h > ~/CRASH_MEMORY.txt; ps -ef > ~/CRASH_PROCESSES.txt’

Comment: The normal “GUI” mode is selected via ‘Ctrl+Alt+F7’.

The output after Ctrl+Alt+F1 I don’t think says anything meaningful.

After pkill -9 smtube SMTube closed but the screen with the video was still open. I had to use App killer to close it, but the cpu usage was still at 25%.

According to Htop mpv it is still working after killing it…

The computer is my work computer and I won’t be able to use it again until Monday (fortunately 😉

Please check /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf as root, make the device section as below and see if it helps.

Killing the SMTube keeps some processes open… surprising.
SMTube obviously spawns new ‘mpv’ processes (this could be visualised using ‘pstree’ utility, e.g. ‘pstree > ~/PROC_TREE.txt’) that survive the ‘pkill’.

The output after Ctrl+Alt+F1 I don’t think says anything meaningful.

It should basically look as a full-screen terminal where you can login (with no GUI available).
Not quite sure whether that appeared when you pressed the combination.
I thought that this could be helpful if your session gets stuck but this works.
It seems that the last incident reported only keeps the “SMTube” (and sub-processes) stuck and running while your system is responsive.

How about the questions asked by @PPC?

Have a nice (and bug/problem-free) weekend!

                        1. Moddit’s pickup of something that needs to be specifically edited seems worthwhile to fix. There are many threads involving something happening peculiarly until a missing file is installed or loaded.

If that doesn’t fix your problem,

                        2. I ran into an app launching multiple instances. Before I realized this, I killed the app and then noted it was still present in htop. If you are in htop, you can look for additional instances of the same “thing” by hitting F3 additional times, IIRC. Then you could kill each instance. Then things might start working again.

But #2 doesn’t tell you why that is happening, whereas if #1 is the problem, you have a fix.

Moodlt, in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d the only file in there is synaptics.conf

lets try and be better/hopefully easier

First create a new document for the intel configuration.
                            sudo touch /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf

Now start your favorite editor from the terminal with sudo I would do
                            sudo rox

open the file you just created in/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d called 20-intel.conf

Paste following in to that file and then save the file afterwords.

                            Section “Device”
                            Identifier “Intel Graphics”
                            Driver “intel”
                            Option “DRI” “3”
                            EndSection

Reboot your system and see if you are still having a problem.
If you are still getting crashes after creating the file as above please post result of inxi -G

When I included the new file I lost the graphical interface. I had to delete it by entering it from a USB stick.

Question: Did you copy and paste from Moddit’s post the 20-intel.conf file ?
Just seen the quotation marks are malformed.Might this is the reason for lost of the graphical interface.

This does not happen if the code-blocks are used.

                                Section "Device"
                                   Identifier "Intel Graphics"
                                   Driver "intel"
                                 # Option "TearFree" "true"
                                   Option "DRI" "3"
                                EndSection

The option TearFree works very nice for me. It should be out commented, if you want to try it.

so far there hasn’t been any problem, but the cpu is practically 100% playing videos that are inside a website. I don’t know if that’s normal for this cpu.
